As someone who worked in construction and also received evening and weekend emergency phone calls, I feel your pain! The individual contributor role seems like it would be a good one for you at this point in your life -more time for kids, closer to family, more money... what's not to like!? You're young and can get back on the management stress-track later.

Thanks so much to everyone for your insights. After additional discussion with the new potential employer it sounds like there is quite a bit of room to grow and get back to the management role which feels like a good fit....we have all but decided to go with it. I think a bit of lateral time in my career will do well for my family and I have always been able to perform well and move up. so on the surface I feel I can do that again when I am ready.

Good choice. Nothing is 'free', especially our time.
Best wishes,

As someone who has taken a step back, I have no regrets. Also, as someone in the recruiting industry, I would say that as long as you keep current on your industry, keep a good network and are savvy with branding yourself, you should be fine. I have known many people who stepped back for quality of life issues who had no problem jumping back into their upward trajectory with success, once when they were ready. No one is guaranteed a tomorrow and your kids will be young only once.
Best of luck!
