Forced Retirement

Hi All,

After 23 years in the military I was no longer able to continue to serve due to medical issues. I retired late last year at age 46 with a wife and a 9 year old to support. I have been seeing VA and Social Security doctors every since. Thankfully my pension along with VA and SSA disability more than make up for my loss of salary and benefits. Now I just have figure out what to do with myself.

Luis, welcome aboard!

I'm sorry to hear of your forced retirement, but I'm glad to hear that we (the US) seem to be taking reasonably good care of you. It seems only fair considering your service.

I hope you'll find interesting things to do in retirement. Spends lots of time with the little one -- that's an opportunity you have that lots of other fathers would love to have.

... sounds like the two are balancing each other out. That must get old real quick.

Have you read any of Ernie Zelinksie's books, or looked at his "Get-A-Life Tree"?

Texican,

Welcome! ER is more of a process than a destination for me.

welcome to the board.
and thank you for the 23 yrs of service...outstanding!

i wish you luck with your medical issues...and so glad you have the right benefits paths to use.

take a break, rest up, go easy on yourself...and yes, do read Zelinski's book "Happy Wild and Free" or those 3 words in a different order. there will be a lot of inspiration in there...

Welcome to the board! Here's the link to Zelinski's book:

Amazon.com: How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free: Retirement Wisdom That You Won't Get from Your Financial Advisor: Ernie J. Zelinski: Books

I haven't read it, but have read many good reviews.

As Free To Canoe wrote, ER is a process. Some, like me, chose to go back to work, and others are elated to be free of a time clock. It does take a while to find the middle ground.

Texican, although I'm sorry you have medical issues, hopefully you'll get them resolved and find some fun things to fill your life. Develop a hobby, make some new friends, volunteer to help others, and join some clubs.
