Congrats. That is great.
Discovering this site led me to using varied retirement calculators and then felt comfortable to retire.

Congratulations.
My journey is similar to what I hope your friend’s will be. Someone like you retired early in my career. That planted the seed in my mind that I could do it too. You did that for your colleague. Then, your advice was spot on. LBYM’s which is similar to “save a bunch of money”, and get educated. This forum helped me a bunch. Early retirement is definitely one of those things where you don’t know what you don’t know. This group is very helpful in finding those things out.
We look forward to updates along the way. Make it the best time of your life so as not to waste the accomplishment you’ve achieved.

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy retired life as much as I have. It's been the best and most enjoyable part of my life, much to my surprise and glee.

Several of my co-workers asked me that when I retired early. I told them "The last 10 years I spent 40 hours a week working for Motorola and 10-15 hours a week working on my investing."
Every single one of them lost interest upon hearing that.

Congrats. I also RE'd at 53 (involuntarily) 15 years ago but I must credit much of my post RE success to this forum!
I've learned so much early on here; it made a significant difference both financially and mentally.
As "Jerry1" said above, many times you don't know what you don't know and this place very often fills that gap.
Thanks to the good folks here I dodged a few Medicare and SS bullets as well as picked up a lot of general good advice on a number of non-RE subjects.

Years ago I was involved in giving tours of our plant to new hires, job applicants and interested parties. Most of these were very young and a bit starry eyed. They were all planning buying their Porsche or BMW. They were all interested in what I did to start out there. I sort of glossed over all the crap we had to deal with. They would learn soon enough. I told them it did not all smell like roses though. But I did tell them I invested the max in my 401K from day one. They all thought I was nuts. They could not comprehend throwing their money away like that. I explained that the match from the company was the best deal they would ever get. Years later some of them have taken the advice and thanked me. In fact one of them even called me on my home phone to thank me. That means I talked to him and her more than 15 years ago since that was before I carried a cell. They were both on the tour and ended up gettin married. They are not rich but they claim that they are better off than their peers. Makes me proud that I could help a future ER.

Reminds me of my time at a large consulting firm. They had a mandatory two-day orientation session for new hires. The majority of the new hires were kids just out of school, while I was in my 40s - easily the age of their dads.
Sometime during the second day, the presenters started going over the firm's benefits package; health insurance, ESOP, 401k, etc. I saw a lot of bored expressions at my table.
During the next break, I couldn't resist. I said to them "I know I'm your parent's age, and being a lawyer, I'm even duller than you think they are. But, you all should really pay attention to this stuff because, believe it or not, someday even you will be retiring."
