Hello - Retired in TX

This is my first post on this site.

In early 2006 I retired after 26 yrs 10 mos and 10 days of service to my country as a military and civilian (DAC) employee.

I moved from NJ to TX because of the lower cost of living.

My wife and my 3 kids are enjoying the retirement life in TX. Since my retirement my wife and I have not worked and we spend our time enjoying our children, attending church, attending school activities, etc..., etc.., etc....

I am a born and bred TEXAN so the culture shock was not a problem for me. After being all over the world and being in places that were great and NOT to good it is a blessing to be settled in Texas. However my wife came from a big city of about 12 million and my kids had always been around cities/towns that had diversed military communities, fast food chains, activities for them to do, etc..., etc... So for them even though we had visited many times during month long vacations it took a while for them to get used to life in a small Texas town. But the kids have adjusted and they love being close to their grandpa, great grandma and family.

We love our modest life and GOD has provided us with everything we need and for more then we really need.

Texas is indeed a state of mind. I lived in the Austin area for a few years and I still have a warm spot in my heart for Tejas. Moving there from NJ was a very wise move in so many ways. Enjoy your new life and keep us informed of how things are going.

I actually liked NJ but the area was just too expensive, the property taxes are too high and the cost of living is a bit high.
As for Texas beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It isn't what's in your eye that you should be worried about. It's the scorpions, rattlesnakes, killer bees, mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, tarantulas, copperheads, cottonmouths, rabid skunks, wild hogs, oppressive heat & humidity, bleak desolate scenery, dirty beaches, polluted air, drought, wildfires, water shortages, recurring floods, rednecks, ebola virus, flesh eating bacteria, unbelievably high property taxes, and lack of real estate appreciation.

Other than that, it's OK.
