Just Curious, what does 'FIRE' stand for?

Just Curious, what does 'FIRE' stand for?

Lurking on the boards for a while -- I'm just curious about the term 'FIRE'?

Financial Independance Retire Early = FIRE.

That was my first question, too.

It still doesn't quite work for me, since I often see it used as a verb "I'm going to FIRE in three years!" You wouldn't say "Hey, I'm going to Financial Independance Retire Early in three years!"

Maybe it should be "BFIRED" = Be Financially Indepedent and Retire Early, Duh!"

They you could say "I'm going to BFIRED in three years!"

Or FIRE = "F*** it! Retire early!"

I thought "FIRE" came into play from that movie Office Space where the mumbler guy with the red stapler burns down his office and ends up retiring to the Caribbean. Not that this board condones this way to early retirement.
