Looking for used car need advice

Hi everyone,

Just had someone hit me last week, looks like car will be a total loss, still waiting to hear from insurance. I spoke to one of my neighbors and he mentioned that he is good friends with a Hyundai dealer and to talk to him before I do anything.

I might be looking at a used Elantra and wanted to know if anyone had any experiences good or bad with them. I heard that they can be noisy on the highway. I drive about 5-6k/yr, so just looking for something to get to point A to B.

Thanks

I bought my first Elantra new in 1999. At around 200,000 miles and nine years later it got sold/scraped. Then I got a late model used in 2003 that after around 200,000 was sold and driven by another party in 2011. It was running fine but circumstances dictated that the third Elantra be purchased to ensure arrival at work without incident. We also bought one in 2010 that we are using now at 65,000 with zero issues. Over all that experience, we have had zero incidents that are not related to normal wear. If I need a car tomorrow, I will go buy another one without a lot of hesitation.

Your neighbor may be more motivated/interested in getting his buddy a customer rather than getting you a good deal. Buy it on it's merits. There are car forums like Edmunds.com that are a lot more useful than here in researching cars.

I just helped my daughter pick-out a car. We used consumer reports.

Hyundai Elantra Touring '10-11 is in there as "Used cars to avoid".

But Hyundai Elantra (sedan) is in there
under $10K: '07-'08,
$10K-$15K: '09-10,
$15K-$20K:'11-'12 (these all have Electronic Stability Control, a good safety feature)

Sonata 4 cyl is in there for '06, '08, '09.

Look up the specific model on kbb.com and edmunds.com to make sure you're not paying too much!!

Suzuki Samuri! A friend in high school had one..what a fun little 'truck'. If I remember it would be in 4th great and 30 miles an hour (manual tranny). I think it would be fun to have one.
