Retire from the Navy in 2017

I remember when I was going through the VA process and I made the comment that I really don’t need this as I have AD retirement. The lady said this is not for young you but old you as your body is pretty busted and bear up. So upon receipt of payment I have never looked at not spending money on trying to stay as healthy as I could be. I view it as I need to do everything to try and mitigate the issues. However I would gladly give it all back for the challenges to go away or have never happened.

Congrats Hawkeye...

Were you ever at PAX with say VX-20 for T&E?

Been there since Jan 1980 with VX-23.

Me and BigDAWG are going to have a celebration for his RE when i get back from Snow birding in FLA.

You'll love taking it easy.

For shore tours I was always up in the Beltway doing program management or working requirements at OPNAV. But I did manage to spend a lot of time at VX-20, got a few flights there and also at NRL/VXS-1. Always good to wear a flight suit instead of khakis, so I was down there 2 or 3 days a week during major test events several years back. I don't get over there much these days, but I do visit NAVAIR HQ about once a month for meetings.

I left the Air Force in 1995. I’m hurting pretty bad these days. Never thought I needed to contact the VA. Is it too late for me? Where do I begin?
I'd start with a Veterans Service Organization (VSO). Don't go directly to the VA. I went through the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, as it was very convenient (they have an office I can walk to), and the staff were very professional and helpful. Others have had good experiences with DAV or VFW or similar groups. You can find one near you by using this search page: https://www.va.gov/ogc/apps/accreditation/index.asp?

The Navy is shrinking, getting rid of people, and making promotions tougher. The only exception seems to be the SWO community, where all the good officers seem to get out after 4-6 years. So the bonuses are disappearing, except for the SWOs. Aviation bonuses aren't all gone yet, but are definitely decreasing. I got lucky and got a few bonus checks while they were around. The Navy is still fun, but OPNAV.........
Does the SWO community still eat their young? Lol

Sometimes I'm not sure why I'm still at work.

Here's the updated numbers.......
Nearly $4.7M in net worth, about $3M in investments including retirement accounts, including $.3M of in college accounts for the kids. On top of that, add retirement pay and VA disability.

Typing from my Pentagon cubicle.

Maybe you have not found what you are retiring too rather than from?

Perhaps, but when I first retired in 2017 and didn't work for several months, it sure wasn't boring!

So why are you still working? You’ve got the finances licked. Perhaps you just like it and that’s ok.

In the mean time I am sure uncle sugar likes all the marginal tax revenue and FICA you are paying.

Alright Hawk. Here is the plan: Fixer and I will come up and meet you for lunch in Crystal city. After lunch you can take us in and meet your boss. Fixer and I will file a complaint with HR and before you know it security will be escorting you to the door. Problem solved.

HA! love it!

One of the reasons I've stayed around in this gig so long is that it's all aviators here. Good people. The bosses are VF/VFA guys, so they sometimes need a lot of direction, and the slow fat kids from VAW like me can do that in our sleep! Easy money!

So, honestly that's why I've stuck around: good people, and easy money.
