Retirement in the future
Just joined I'm 53 and started downsizing for possible early retirement. Planned on retiring at 60 but feel my job could be eliminated in 5 yrs. We sold our big house and currently purchased 1/2 of a twin home slab on grade. My wife is 4 yrs younger and she will retire when I do. We plan on being snowbirds in AZ when we retire. I been looking at similar sites, my main concern for retiring at any age is Health Care cost.

Downsizing and de-cluttering now is a great idea. It's something that's discussed here a lot. Seems many of us spend the first part of our lives accumulating junk, and the rest trying to get rid of it. The getting rid part is harder. For me, anyway.
And of course you're right that health care is the biggest wild card right now. But we all trust our noble elected leaders to solve that problem for us. Right?

Welcome to the site.
I would start checking out the Healthcare marketplace site to get an early read of potential health care costs in current dollars.
I would also have a good sense of current and potentially future expense budgets.

I am 55 and plan to retire at 58. So I am thinking like you are. We are in the process of downsizing. The decluttering started in earnest a couple months back. I educate myself as much as possible. I just took a retirement course at the local community college. I started a bucket list of things we want to do, places we want to go, education I want to get, etc. I am building up more short term reserves to deal with sequence of returns risk. We are looking at additional income streams. Planning for early retirement is almost a job in and of itself, but I enjoy it.

A few additional things most of us would encourage in the years leading up to ER:
- track your actual spending to validate your financial assumptions
- run your numbers through calculators such as FIREcalc (link at bottom of each page here)
- watch your asset allocation and make sure you are comfortable with it
