Hmmmm - are you mildly insane also - heh, heh, heh - people keep telling me I need a common sense pill - but so far I've resisted.

When you say that you are insane, do you mean you have multiple personalities? Maybe unclemick and Zipper are the same person.

Keep your graduate Curmudgeon degree's ready - I've morphed past the 13 year old from Missoula of last winter - into the home stretch of grumpy old phart. Got 'The Yogi Book' for my birthday in July - so will be working on my thesis for that advanced degree.

You else could you depend on for De Gaul and the Nowegian widow.

This winter - may add investment insight from Charles Deming, and Bear Bryant - and of course Yogi Berra.

I love this post. There are more inside jokes and references for long term posters than you can shake a stick at. The poor newbies are scratching their heads and convinced that unclemick really is insane.

About the only thing unclemick left out was any mention
of Ted, who took his glove and ball and went home.

Well . . . now that unclemick is taking on multiple personalities, maybe he will take on that of Ted and bring him back to us. * *

Of course the post also leaves off mention of our most important icon -- dryer sheets.

modified: I see unclemick beat me to the dryer sheet omission by seconds. He may be an insane crumudgeon, but he's quick.

Ted was a smart guy, but he took himself
way too seriously. I am sure lots of folks get
tired of me too, but I don't care. I know a lot of
my stuff is horse poop and platitudes. But, it's like Reagan
said, "There's got to be a pony in there somewhere!"

John Blake,
How was the recent north swell in Hawaii? We had amazing surf at Trestles (Orange County) last week and good surf in Encinitas today.

Re: Thinking of RE

We had a few days of good north surf. The trades were blowing so tow was limited to early morning and evening. The windsurfing was excellent on Tuesday.

Re: Thinking of RE

Hello All,
I taking the plunge !! I'm testing the Perpetual Traveler lifestyle (again) starting next week in Mexico. Over the next 2+ years I'll be traveling and surfing in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua...

Current Asset Allocation:

IRAs 200 K (Traditional and Roth)
Brokerage 120K
Ind Stock 75K (Private company stock from options)

QQQ 51 %
Schwab 1000 28%
Individual Stock 21%

I'm planning to take your diversification advice (thanks again!) and move 100 % of my IRAs to Vanguard Target Retirement 2035 or Wellington.

Maybe move my Brokerage (non tax deferred) dollars to Wellington too? Any other suggested investment advice for the Brokerage dollars ? I do want to take Unclemick's advice and keep things as simple as possible.

I plan to let my IRAs grow and not draw them down for a long long time (I'm 39). I'll likely do some part time work or start a small business in Central America at some point.....if I need to or want to. When I do settle down, I plan on living outside the US...thinking about Costa Rica or Panama.

I plan to spend $16K (~ 4%) per year for all expenses while traveling for the next few years...no flight expenses since I have boatloads of frequent flyer miles.

Any advice appreciated,

Surfs Up

Re: Thinking of RE

It appears that you can't even purchase Vanguard Target Retirement Funds using an individual Schwab account

I currently have all my accounts at Schwab...thinking of moving everything to Vanguard......how has Vanguard been for everyone?

BTW....a good article to check out at Barns and Noble on(Mutual Fund Supermarkets)....Forbes Sept 2004.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Thinking of RE

I use both Schwab and Vanguard. Over the last years I've dealt with dozens of investment companies and mutual funds. Vanguard is in another league -- no other company comes close.
