Would Like to correspond with others

I am leaving my current job and entering early retirement, but I would like to retrain and start another career at 51. Are there any others on this forum like me? If so, please e-mail me at rfwind@ hotmail.com. Thanks

Re: Would Like to correspond with others

I think most people here are ER'd or are close to it and not even thinking about work. Seems like you are defeating the purpose and meaning of ER by starting again unless the new career is something you absolutely love to do. Good luck!! I may refer to Cut Throat. He thinks about work often.

Wildcat-

Well, we differ on that point. My dream is to achieve financial independence and retire to part time gainful employment which I control, instead of it controlling me. Time will tell how well this works, but the recent articles about longevity of Supreme Court justices and other seniors who are able to keep working in jobs they like provides encouragement.

So wind, don't give up hope, I'm sure there are others lurking here with similar interests.

I think the key there, rapoole, is achieving financial independence first. After that, do what you want...

Again I say unless you absolutely enjoy it and I haven't seen too much of that around here. *Enjoying a job with plenty of free time from work is a whole different scene if you ask me.

Yeah, you're right about that. I think about work a lot. I think I'm totally happy not doing it anymore

Re: Would Like to correspond with others

R-F Wind,
I am with you , as are w few others around here. Most people here have enough money that they can live off a 4% safe withdrawal rate and/or their pension, and therefore technically don't need to work for money. Those who do need a bit of money to make all thle numbers work out generally try to consult with a former employer or in their old industry, or else go to something really different that they like very much, even if it doesn't pay much.

If you need so much money that you really just need to retrain and get another job, then it isn't really early retirement and so there wouldn't be much help on this forum in that case.

One thing is that its a lot easier to make money inyour old field than in something new so you should not plan on making much money. Anything over 20k a year would probably be a stretch in a part-time ER-friendly mode. 5-10k is probably a safer estimate.

But, and this is where the debates tend to start around here, I contend people in ER should do something work-like even if they don't need the money, or even if they don't get paid, in order to keep themselves engaged, feeling positive, challenged and so on. I would set a pretty low bar about what that means, but surfing the web all day would not pass the cut (nor would posting here all day, imho, which may get me some flames)

Warren Buffet gave his kids enough money that they could do whatever they wanted, but not so much that they could do nothing at all. I think the sage from Omaha was onto something.

Bumz-

Re FI, couldn't agree more. Re tan, doesn't sound healthy. But maybe that's just because I never enjoyed tanning.

Rapoole: Do you work at FAA, by any chance?

Chester-

No. I work for the federal government and do litigation. Lots of stress, travel and Federal judges own your calendar. I actually still enjoy the challenge, but am ready for a change.

Re: Would Like to correspond with others

My idea of early retirement is to be FI and take on a career that I enjoy rather than doing it for the money. I'm not sure what that would be but I would want to work only 15-20 hours a week and take lots of vacations. Is that something that you had in mind as well or were you thinking of getting back into the 40-50 hour a week habit?

One thing my wife and I thought might be fun/interesting is flipping houses. We've always done our own remodelling and thought that we could travel around the USA , staying in areas we're interested in for a few months while fixing up a house or two either for resale or for use as a rental property. We don't want to start doing this until we're financially independent but thought it would be a great way to get to know an area while building equity and if we do find a town that we love we could stay there for a while and manage our real estate holding from that location. It would be a great way to work but still be together which is what we want most of all.

What sort of post-retirement career did you have in mind?

Hello BUM. Cute!

Just wanted to let you all know that working for yourself is not necessarily
a "bed of roses". Anyway, assuming I had ed to work, I was already
trained (real estate investment). Early on I thought I would get into this
in a big way, esp. since I needed to work PT in 1993 when I first quit.
I think the PT work can be a nice way to go. I am no longer interested,
and it very likely would have messed up my retirement as I find it almost
impossible to keep from going at "warp speed". This is certainly true when I'm
self-employed. No, I think I better follow Cut-Throat's example, i.e.
just think about work but don't actually do any

Those sound like great jobs, especially the bikini repair. I may have to include that in my future plans as well.

Like any other field service profession proper education is the key. I suggest a training video entitled, Girls Gone Wild.

I really enjoyed GIRLS GONE WILD until I recognized my daughter
in one video (just kidding).
I did like to watch the commercials except for them having Snoop Dog
as host. But, I am an old "phart" and realize that when it comes to
pop
culture, "Ve know nothing! Nothing!". Now, ask me about the
Civil War...............there I have some information
