Hi - I've been lurking here off and on for about a year now and finally decided to sign up and say hello.

A bit about myself: I'm 30ish, Canadian, married with kids, and am just finishing up my PhD.

Lately I've got a strong leaning to be self-employed. I think this is for several reasons, all off which I've seen on the boards here and made me feel like a somewhat kindred spirit with ya'll.

I hope to have some good discussion with everyone here, and I look forward to being FIRE'd, or at least the ability to decide when or if I retire.

Hi Nords,

I'm an ecologist by training so self-employed in my world would be in ecological and environmental consulting. This sort of consulting is in good demand here in Alberta with the booming oil and gas industry having to meet environmental regulations and so forth.

I have also teamed up with a friend and we are designing an online business for university undergraduates. It hasn't been launched yet but hopefully it will be within the next few months.
