In sunlight, I agree that the screen washes out too much for comfortable reading. But if I'm outdoors in the sun, I'm not likely to be toting an iPad.
+1. I have used my Nook Color (backlit, tablet screen) in all kinds of light and never have a problem. When reading in bed with lights out I set the brightness at the lowest level. Sitting on beach I set it at the highest. I don't think it would be good in direct sunlight but I don't like to be in direct sun while reading in any event.

I plan to see what MS does with Windows 8 on various tablets this year and then will decide whether to go with a new iPad, Win8, or whatever the best Android devices are next fall. Any of them should work well as a combination e-reader, email reader, and generic Web browser.

This article is about three of the newer readers/tablets - Nook, iPad mini and the Surface. The NOOK seems to be a much better product compared to its main rival (Kindal) for about the same or less money.

The Kindle Fire is a decent couch-based web surfer*, but not such a good reader. I get eye strain rather quickly using it for much reading...

* The damned thing kept knocking my wi-fi off the air. Probably need to replace my ten year old wireless router, but in the meantime, if I only use the Kindle, and all other computers are idle or off, it works fine.

Which reminds me, we need an Android app for er-org.

How does the old Kindle Fire compare with the new Kindle Fire HD ? I would think the HD version would be much better.

Have not seen or tried the HD version, but I have the same problem staring at a computer monitor or iPhone; eyes get fry, fatigued, etc., probably from the reduced blink rate...
