Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

I'm not.
I have met famous people.
But I don't think I know anyone famous enough that you may have heard of.
Well wait a minute - I had John Dean & Jim Bouton (I bet nobody remembers him) as neighbors growing up.

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

I will assume you don't mean "I met Sammy Davis jr after the show once" or something like that. I have several of those "famous" encounters, including Sammy Davis

I myself, just last summer, was locally famous due to being involved in a big arson case. Somebody kept trying to burn my building down. I "saved the day " for all three fires that were set* before they nabbed the perp. Was on TV and everything

Just a few days ago there was a long Vanity Fair article exposing the lies and cover-ups by NORAD and the Defense department about exactly what happened on 9-11. Keith Obermann on MSNBC even played some of the NORAD tapes on the air. I used to work at the Northeast Air Defense Sector. The person named Shelley Watson in the article, whose voice an be heard on the tapes is an old friend of mine from my days there. Of course she* didn't get "famous" such as it is, till a few days ago. And she's not Lucille Ball famous

Sounds like 'prime suspect' material if you ask me

Hey buddy, don't you know it! After the second one I KNEW the po'hleece probably thought it was me. Calls in all 3 fires... "valiently fights the fire himself", ... meets the Fire dept and po-leece when they arrive. Yes, that is one profile of an arsonist. The attention seeker.

The other kind starts the fires then hides around the corner and watches everybody jump. So, there's this wierdo who lives on the 3rd floor, none of the neighbors really know him, he's hoem a lot, and he has no job but somehow has his rent paid 2 months in advance. Better check that guy out.

Fortunately they planted a "candid camera" to surveille the hallway. That's how they nabbed the 75 yr old grand mother on the 2nd floor who was starting the fires.

But I figured I would be at the very least "a person of interest"

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

I once flew from Minneapolis to Los Angeles on a plane with Chris Farley (Saturday Night Live, Tommy Boy, etc.) across the aisle from me and Edgar Winter (musician) behind me. *

Chris Farley got sh#t-faced drunk. *The flight crew cut him off, but he actually went up into the service area and scavaged booze from collected service trays. *At one point while I was waiting in line to get into the bathroom, he came up to me and said, "Hey, bro. *You look like you must have some weed. *How about sharing?" *

Edgar Winter was very nice. *He was traveling with a young (unkown) guitarist and he kept telling people that this young kid was the real star.

The previous owner of my house was Sylvester Stallone's aunt. That's my extremely tenuous brush with fame. Our neighbor said that Stallone paid for the sunroom addition on the back, too. You're welcome to come see it.

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

My sister's ex-BF is Joss Whedon, of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' fame. Went to visit her at college where JW was known for being without the proverbial 2 nickels to rub together.. re-using tea bags at the caf, and having his tuition paid by rich friends' putting it on their Amex card... ("Rich" TV writer dad with expensive new wife and bad money sense 'forgot' to pay the kid's way.)* I remember being in NY with them once and he didn't have enough for a subway token.

When he hit it big they'd already broken up amicably; he called to chat w/her and I answered the phone, congratulated him and asked.. "Soo.. bet you're getting all kinds of calls from Shearson and Lehman.."

Him: "yeah.. I'm doing bong hits with Shearson and Lehman...!"*

He spends a lot, I know, on houses and stuff now, but we did visit him in LA during the Buffy years; he made us Rice-A-Roni for supper and proudly showed us his Happy Meal toy collection. Then I gather he really started to live higher on the hog and sis/BIL stopped being able to keep up with the pricey dinners out with him and the new GF. He's really a nice guy and has at least one kid now, I hear. I wish him all the best and hope he invests wisely because H'wood is a cruel and fickle place where it's "all about the benjamins" and worse, about maintaining a "millionaire" image despite what your ATM tells you.

Since I was a Yankees fan, when I was young and into baseball, I remember Jim Bouton - wrote a book called 'Ball four' that caused quite a ruckous.

I'm like uncklemick - don't know anyone famous.

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

Dave Barry was one of my brother's roommates in college, so I met him a couple of times--he was a funny guy from way back. My brother is now running for mayor of his town--maybe he should get Dave to help with advertising

I dated a guy in high school who became a second-tier orchestra conductor (Roger Nierenberg). I attended a program for promising string players run by the Budapest String Quartet and got lessons from each of the members. I sat on the bus once with Murray Perahia, our token painist(!). Murray's famous among classical piano cognoscenti. I dated another guy (Louis Ranger) who became a famous trumpet player. I played chamber music with Gerald Elias, concertmaster of the Utah Symphony and a composer. I probably know more semi-famous classical musicians, but don't know it or forgot.

Thanks to elections, I have shaken hands with Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. I've met (handshake again) Roger Staubach, Tom Landry, Kinky Friedman, Dean Ornish, Milton Berle, and. . . well stop it now, none of these encounters mean anything. So no, don't know any and no one in my family has made headlines. I'm gonna keep trying.

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

I spent four hours in first class sitting next to Bill Nye the Science Guy. I kept admonishing myself not to get all freaky with fan worship, and the self-imposed strain was almost unbearable.

Bill used his own logo stationery (gridded at four blocks per inch) for notes, rough drafts, and other paperwork. I couldn't decide if he was advertising to the rest of the passengers ("Say, you look just like the guy's cartoon head on that piece of engineering graph paper!") or if it had something to do with copyrights.

I finally cracked and made some innocuous comment about the scenery. He grabbed the conversation and galloped off with it in a manner that indicated he has an extremely busy brain. His parents must've had one heckuva child-raising experience with his inquisitive nature. Nice guy, and his geek act isn't an act.

Then there's notoriety. Gumby and I went to school with Scott Waddle and I've been around him for years in Pearl Harbor. I also worked with a guy who was ramping himself up to commit murder, grievous bodily harm, and suicide. I had the misfortune of being the last person to talk with him as he left work to get started.

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

I worked at the US Embassy in Baghdad from 2004-2005

Worked personally with Amb. Jerry (Paul) Bremer and Dan Senor (White House spokesman)
While there also met Rummie and Powell
Geraldo was always around until we kicked him off the compound.

My personal favorite:

I got to escort and be personal bodyguard for the late Peter Jennings (ABC) and Christiana Amonpour (CNN) for the pre-trial of Saddam Hussein. Got to see Saddam up close and personal.

Also met a lot of musicians and comedians.

Re: Are You Kinda Famous Or Know Someone Who Is

When I was a kid, Kris Kristofferson was married to my neighbor's aunt. My neighbor and I used to baby sit his daughter when she was about 2 and they were visiting from Nashville.

This would have been in the early to mid 60's, so I think it was before he was famous. Or if he was already famous, I only knew he was a musician...didn't know he was anyone special.

Distant cousin to John Mellencamp. Not sure I ever met the guy , even though I hung out with a few musicians from Seymour, IN, including Larry Crane, guitarist for Mellencamp and for John Prine, among others...

From the TMI dept, Mellencamp's song "Minutes to Memories" has a line about "another hot one out on Highway 11", the location of my first piece sexual encounter with another person...

Song wasn't about me, but could've been about her... *
