I am guessing that some of the reasons include the fact that he had a serious mental health disorder before enlisting and became more mentally ill as time went on. The other factor was that he did cooperate. I am torn about this because he did desert and caused his fellow soldiers harm while searching for him. I think a life sentence would not have accomplished anything but the fact that he is not serving any time seems strange. Although, prison would not improve his mental health status.
