I really liked Daniel Craig in "Casino Royale". But, I haven't seen him in anything else so who knows.

I've read all the Bond books by Ian Fleming. Daniel Craig plays Bond MOST like the Bond character in the books IMHO. I really like him in the Bond role and I never thought I'd say that having loved Sean C since the early Bond roles.
DC plays a really nasty character in Road to Perdition - you'd hardly recognize him. He plays the protagonist in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - a good, if a bit difficult to watch sometimes (squirm factor) whodunit. YMMV

+1
I always thought Sean Connery was by far the best Bond, until I saw Casino Royale! Daniel Craig blew him out of the water. Craig was just as I always imagined Bond would be (after reading all of the Bond books, like you), including that hard-as-steel inner core to Bond's personality.
I don't watch many movies but I should see DC in another movie some day.

Just a nudge to remind, in case you might want to vote, that this poll ends Jan 5, 2021 (thanks, MichaelB!).
The choice of names that appear came from tallying up votes that were submitted in the first 78 posts in this thread.

Can't argue with Tom Hanks and Meryl, but I think Ed Norton could actually tie them for how well he's acted. Give him the same longevity in Hollywood and I wouldn't be surprised to see him demonstrate that he could even be better. Leonardo DiCaprio is underrepresented here imo, he's an amazing actor who has done a great job showing a wide range of acting abilities. I think some of the best actors out there end up not showing their full range due to getting into a single role for a long time. Emmy Rossum I think could be great, but her long-standing role keeps her from showing additional range I think.
