When alone, I always say (very truthfully) "I don't have my calendar with me. I'll have to consult my social secretary." (DW is social secretary if you hadn't picked up on that.) This way, DW has a chance to say yea or nay. YMMV

When cornered we usually just explain to them that we are in the Witness Protection Program and our handlers would rather we keep a low profile for the next several years. We aren’t very social, which is why we choose to live where there are more deer than people. We don’t get many invites anymore.
