Found a great way to search this forum
using Google.
I had a question and did a search using the advanced features on this site. I couldn't find an answer so was about to post the question.
Before I posted I decided to search Google. I entered the following complete sentence: "are dividends included in SWR calculation". Low and behold the very first hit was here on early-retirement and it took me to the exact post needed to answer my question.
You guys may already use this method, but thought I'd pass along in case not.

Lisa the "Powered by Google" search box near the top of the page uses Google to search the forum - that is unless you check the Google box when it will search the web also. It's a handy tool.

Lisa, pretty soon you're going to know all the e-r.org secrets--recycle dryer sheets, avoid Ameriprise, use Google

Thanks, I had not noticed that feature before. Should have known you guys already had a handy/dandy search feature because the typical forum search is not at all helpful :-)

and know what is included in a SWR calculation!
The really scary thing about finding these nuggets is that I don't know what I don't know...which is why I spend time every day reading this forum and thanking heaven that we have several years before retirement!

Another version of this is to go to google and type something like:
dividends SWR calculation site:early-retirement.org
The site: tag restricts results to the given website.

2Cor, no need to go to Google type all that in. The Google search box above, with Early-Retirement.Org selected, does precisely that.

Ruh-roh, when you get one of these compliments from a moderator it means that they're thinking of filling a few moderator vacancies...

I'm about the most under-qualified person for moderator on this forum. Heck, I just found you guys in August and just learned today that dividends are included in the SWR

Yeah, REWahoo and I used to say that too, and the rest of the forum agreed with us...

Is that the same as "Google Custom Search"? My page seems to be different than what you describe. Or am I off in left field... again?

Ron, yes I believe the Google custom search found in the drop-down search menu and the one I pointed out are the same search accessed from different areas of the page. For some reason I'm getting an error message when I try to use the drop-down Google search and I've asked Janet H to check it out. Maybe she can verify both searches use the same criteria.
I attached a screen shot to show the search option at the top of the page. Not sure why your browser is filtering it out...

Apparently it has something to do with which Version of "Forum Skin" is used -- Version 1 or 2.

I can verify that the google search is busted and that it's being looked at. Thanks for the heads up.
The native site search is.... well... lame. It's a key word search and so the google search is infinitely better.

Yes, but the google search doesn't allow (AFAIK) you to search by author (you get any page with that screen name), or limit it to titles, a sub-forum, time frame, etc. Google just finds the presence of the word, it doesn't know anything about content.
A google search for "firecelc" returns every page on the forum, as the word is there on the page sidebars, whether someone is talking about SWR or bacon.
It would be nice if the open-source forum people and google would get together. I assume google can't do those searches w/o getting into the actual forum database, but I dunno. Forums are pretty popular, and other ones I hang out at have the same search issues.
