I really think we should consider corporal punishment for some non-violent crimes. It doesn't have to be cruel or unusual.

If the judge ordered a DWI violator to report for once a month on Saturday mornings for three consecutive months for a public caning, it would probably cause them to think a lot harder about the consequences of drunk driving and cost everybody a lot less money.

The person would probably drive to the affair in a drunken condition so as not feel the pain of the beatings.

Scoundrels like that, which have already demonstrated their propensity to be lazy and take from others, will then just not work, earning no money over food and rent if that. More likely they will then go on the public dole, and we will end up paying for their care, while they are free to commit other "off the books" schemes denying the very thing that you propose.
Like training early children, when they act irresponsibly, you deny them freedoms (access to TV, their favorite toy, etc.) to show them they must suffer for their actions. Similarly, these non-violent criminals that deprive other humans of their livelihood, will only receive a message, when faced with a punishment for which they cannot ignore. Desires to the contrary, notwithstanding.
