Re: Handedness

I'm finding this thread on handedness really interesting. Interesting because it looks like many people are somewhere in the middle of the continuum rather than strictly at either end.

I suspect it is something like sexual orientation, where some are absolutely and definitely homosexual, some are absolutely and definitely heterosexual, and a large number of people have some tendencies toward both, and could function as either, or fall in love with someone of either gender, depending on life experiences........

Too bad we aren't as able to accept that sexual continuum with the same equanimity that we accept handedness. Wouldn't our society be a lot more peaceful and accepting if we could?

Of course there was a time in history when lefthandedness was seen with the same sort of horror as homosexuality awakens in some today. Perhaps in the future, such an attitude will seem as antiquated as discrimination against "lefties" seems today.

Inigo Montoya: I admit it, you are better than I am.
Man in Black: Then why are you smiling?
Inigo Montoya: Because I know something you don't know.
Man in Black: And what is that?
Inigo Montoya: I... am not left-handed.

Inigo Montoya: I ought to be, after 20 years.
Man in Black: Oh, there's something I ought to tell you.
Inigo Montoya: Tell me.
Man in Black: I'm not left-handed either.

Mostly use the right hand, but sometimes switch to left for a change of pace...

Re: Handedness

Lefty for everything but jar-opening. Only lefty in my family. I found a book at the library on left handedness that said we die earlier, because of industrial accidents with equipment designed for rightys. Oh, and in car accidents, we jerk to the left instead of right, causing us to run into oncoming traffic instead of off the road. So we've got that going for us....

Sarah...who works for two lefty bosses...odd demographic

Re: Handedness

if you are left handed it hangs to the right and if you are right handed it hangs to the left. that probably isn't true for girls though; i wouldn't know.

Re: Handedness

I'm definitely a righty, use my right hand for most tasks. Dh is lefty but does some things with his right hand, I'll bet if they hadn't discouraged lefties when he was in grammar school he would be ambidexious.

Re: Handedness

Ambi is great. I tried to be when my right shoulder kept dislocating when I was a kid, but I am apparently WAY left-brained. I couldn't even feed myself left-handed. Kept "cheating" and untethering my right so I could hit my mouth (probably why the shoulder never healed right).

Your daughter will probably gravitate toward righty, just because most everything is built for righties, and it's easier. But being able to use both hands is awesome.
