...but we had to put Daisy, our almost 12 year old Golden Retriever down this morning. We found out that she had inoperable lung cancer. She was in pretty bad shape when we got the diagnosis, but some medicine gave her a fairly comfortable 3 more weeks. Gave us plenty of time to say our goodbyes.

She had more and more trouble breathing since Monday, and I could just see it in her eyes this morning that she was tired of the fight. She would not eat, and that clinched it, as she never missed a meal!! Although it's one of the most difficult things I've had to do (and this is the 3rd time, and no easier than any of the others), I know in my heart it was the right thing to do. She is far more comfortable now. We will grieve and move on. Luckily we have 2 other dogs that will help ease our pain.

Not to open a can of worms, but it occurred to me we treat end of life for our pets far better than we do with humans. As for me, if I ever get to the stage that Daisy was, I hope someone will just give me a dose of that pink stuff. Daisy didn't suffer or fight, just closed her eyes and that was it.

Cancer is a horrible thing.

I have the same story from March with my good Carl dog, Wheel. Same age, same diagnosis, same uneasy feeling that we do more for our animals at the end of their lives than we can do with people.

I am so sorry for your loss. After work today, I'm heading to deliver a ham to a friend who lost her 10 year old Lab/Basset mix day before yesterday. It hurts to love, but it is still better than having never loved them and received their love in return.

Bless you. You gave Daisy a good end, which my vet says is what we owe them.

Sucks. Good for you doing the right thing, and I agree completely.

I'm so sorry.

Animals are very important to me....and I have had many who have shared my life and improved it greatly. They count on us to make good decisions on their behalf, even at the end. Out of love.......you did that.

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is a crushing blow.

So sorry to hear this. We find it harder to handle the ethics of end of life issues when it comes to humans but if we could get to grips with it, it would certainly help us manage our healthcare costs.

But of course, that is a whole other thread. I'm truly sorry to hear about Daisy.

I am so sorry. I lost my Emily, the black Lab, two years and two months ago and am still upset about it. She was my only child. I cry every day over her. Her loss is pretty much the only thing wrong in my life now. I'm crying now.

So sorry to hear about Disney. We lost our two beagles in the past year and I think about them every day.

You did the right thing for her.

I am sorry for your loss. Daisy, Emily, Disney, Wheel, and the others must surely have had the best in life because they had such good humans in their lives. They went from a heaven on Earth to Dog heaven.

Sorry, Wheel.

It doesn't get better every day, but it gets a little better every week.

So sorry Wheel. They become a part of our family and leave all too soon.

So sorry for your loss. We lost our Timber 4 years ago and it does get easier but there are times when I remember the crazy things he did and I still tear up.

So sorry for your loss. The do become members of our family. Cancer does suck!

So sorry for your loss, sounds like it was time. We always have 2or 3 dogs in the house so know the feeling. It doesn't get easier but by now, we know the sadness will lessen but never be completely gone. Hope you have lots of pictures, we look at our former friends often.

I'm very sorry for your loss. As others have said, it gets easier with time but I don't think you ever truly get over it. Our beloved pets become important members of our family. I lost a very special cat over 4 years ago and still there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him.

Very sorry for your loss. I had to put down my golden retriever 2 years ago, so I know how you feel. It's like losing your best friend.

So sorry for your loss. I'm always comforted by the following, hope it helps you as well.
A special life leaves us memories, and memories last forever
