Helicopter Parents-Kids born since early 80s

University administrators have a name for these baby boomer moms and dads who hover over their offspring's college lives.

"Helicopter parents," says Patrick Heaton, FSU's assistant dean of student affairs.
My four do not realize how neglected they were during their college days.

I am so not like this. I want my kids to solve their own problems not add to mine.

I'm a total helicopter dad. I'm trying to improve on it though. My whole day used to be doing constant observation/calculation on what he might touch or do that would hurt him and constantly moving stuff, nudging him in a different direction, etc.

Now its only 92.7% of my day. I even let him climb the steps to the slide at the playground by himself...

Re: Helicopter Parents-Kids born since early 80s

My kid's fantasy of the ideal helicopter parent is Helicopter Ben.

Especially if he can drop her off at the mall after dropping all that money.

Here's a little warning for all you parents of adolescents: when I ask my teenager "Why did you think I'd even consider saying 'Yes' to a request like that?!?" the answer is usually: "Oh, I didn't think so, but I just thought it was worth a try."

Yeah, and right now Jarhead's laughing his assets off...

Re: Helicopter Parents-Kids born since early 80s

Thats easy to fix. Tell her you'll consider any request, as long as its accompanied by a one dollar bill to cover "consideration fees". Anything you agree to results in a refund of the consideration fee.

That oughta weed out the "worth a try" attempts

Yea..I think in these days of cell phones, email and instant messengers, the days of "going off to college" just aren't the same for a lot of kids....

My Sister-In-Laws daughter went off to college last year(1500 miles away)...they both have cell phones and still talk like 5-6 times per day every day("what are you doing now? nothing, what are you doing?")...

I love my kids...but when they go to college I sure hope I feel no need to be in constant; multiple times per day contact with them. Once a week would be fine.

Hell, went I went off to college a once a month phone call was even WAY more than I was subjected to...

I would hitchhike coming home or returning to college. I was always instructed to call collect, person to person for myself as the signal I was back. Once, my grandmother was at the house and answered when I called, and she went into panic mode cause nobody called long distance unless it was an emergency. Long time ago but I still chuckle about it.
