I was in a similar situation, no experience or background in music but my daughter showed an interest. I never did try to learn myself. She took some private lessons, and played in whatever band was available in school. Now marching band is a big part of her life. I help out with chaperoning, pit pack (moving front ensemble for shows) and other logistics, and enjoy the shows. It's kind of nice because I can just enjoy them without really knowing if they were a bit flat or timing was off or whatever. I'm just saying that you can enjoy your kids' experience without picking it up yourself. But if you want to, good for you.
