Insurance woes..... any GOOD company out there?

I had AmFam...I dropped them for nationwide (700 discount yearly!!).

Now Im having problem after problem with them (rate hikes after 1 month, forgot to file my sr-22 with the state and my license was suspended, dropped my auto-home discount and cant explain why). SO, the search continues...

I have 3 homes, one of which I live in. the other two are policies for rentals. I have three cars as well.

who would be a company to talk to about insuring all 6 pieces of property?

Re: Insurance woes..... any GOOD company out there?

I would go talk to a good independent agent in your area for starters.

If you or your family have a military background, it is hard to beat USAA.

I've had good experiences with Liberty Mutual and GEICO, but I don't know whether they are in Ohio. Insurance markets are by state, not federal, so an insurer operating in one state might not be in another.

Maybe travellers? They do a LOT of homeowners plus they also do a lot of commerical business, so maybe they would not be spooked by your personal/business mixture.

Other than that, shop around. You have 6 pieces of property to cover, which means a fair amount of $$$. So long as you are not regarded as a high risk insured, tehre should be companies eager to have you.

I know several people who use Amica and are very happy with them.*

Aside from USAA, that's the only company I can say that about.

Nationwide has been getting some really bad press after their servicing Katrina claims. You might well be rid of them.

Amica is a top shelf insurer, but their prices are top shelf too. If money is no object, Amica would be my choice.

Re: Insurance woes..... any GOOD company out there?

well....amica hasnt responded to my inquiries

I did get ahold of an independent agen, and he's trying to pair me up with Westfield. Anyone know about them? Their headquarters, which is lterally a small town around here, is not to far away.

The hang up right now seems to be the rentals. They want to insure a 50k home for 120k due to replacement costs. I explained i only need 50-60k coverage, but they wont go lower than 100k

he's goign to dig deeper

I don't see any financials on their website, but they have an "A" rating from AM Best, which is good enough.

I wouldn't fight them on how much they want to insure the rentals for. Heck, If they really think the houses are worth that much, get out that can of gasloine and a match...

I have had good service from Statefarm. *I have my autos/motorcycle/home/umbrella with them. *I had a investment home burn down - they started cutting checks right away and did not change my rates. *They are reasonable/competetive in price and my sons soccer coach is my agent - small community. *I am sure you can find insurance cheaper but when you need them to step up.....

Re: Insurance woes..... any GOOD company out there?

Amica gives you some money back every year--IIRC they call it a dividend. We typically get 20% of our premium back so it isn't as expensive as it seems, but still more than most. They provided better earthquake coverage than my friends got from other co's in the Bay Area (a lower deductible before the coverage kicked in)--I suppose Amica had less exposure in CA than other major co's. We're grandfathered in here in SC--they haven't offered homeowner policies here for a few years, not along the coast anyway. To lower our premiums, we increased our deductible when I retired. We may do that again when DH retires: it's generally easier to lower your expenses than to increase your income

D-mn, $120k premium is a bit steep for a $50k house. You should be paying a heck of a lot less.

Sorry couldn't resist.

One... amica is hard to get into... I think you are supposed to get someone to recommend you (at least that is what they told me)...

But, it was EXPENSIVE... probably 30% to 50% higher than others quotes I got.. not worth the extra money for me..

Like I said, top shelf company with prices to match. I cannot imagine that they would be worth it for auto insurance, but perhaps for homeowners wher any problem you file a claim for is likely to be more expensive and complicated. If my current homeowners insurer (Liberty Mutual) flakes out or raises prices too much I would at least price an Amica policy, although I suspect I would be horrified at the price.
