IRS processing time

Not sure if anyone has any insights, suggestions, etc but over 8 months ago my CPA amended our 2015 and 2016 returns. The reason was recent clarification from the IRS about taxes on a portion of our income led to a lower tax burden. The CPA included an explanation for the change with the amended return.

The IRS confirmed receipt in early June. 2015 was processed and the refund received by September. However, the 2016 return is still in processing after 8 long months. Both the CPA and I have called several times with very little info given.

I'm not in a huge rush for the refund but this seems unnecessarily long and costly for the govt, after all they will pay interest on this refund as well.

Hoping someone had some insight or suggestions. Thanks.

You can contact the constituent services office of your Senator or Representative. You can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Office of the IRS. https://www.irs.gov/advocate/the-tax...ice-at-the-irs

I read this article yesterday, and it may have an answer for you. Not a great answer, but at least you know there are others in your boat.

The day before the CR ended the shutdown, the IRS had more than 5 million unprocessed pieces of mail, 80,000 Earned Income Tax Credit audits that had not been addressed and 87,000 amended tax returns that needed to be manually processed.
