Post script: Today I closed out my involvement.
It turned out my brother's ex-wife and I were named as co-executors in the most recent will anyone could find.
I emailed my ex-SIL a declination to serve as an executor. (I copied my adult nephews and snail-mailed her a signed, paper copy.) She immediately acknowledged my emailed declination and thanked me for my work cleaning out the apartment and storing the vehicle. She had been eager to act, so I expect she is pleased I am bowing out.
I am happy to (I HOPE) be finished with this sad duty. Thanks again to everyone here who gave me *very* valuable advice during a tough time. You guys are the best
