Minimized SORR Today

I WON! - $50K in the Powerball.

I was shaking as I only missed the jackpot ($300M) by one number. Even after I was sure I was correct with what I was seeing and confirmed the amount, I was still shaking. When people say they would have a heart attack, I now see it. That's the most I've ever won in my life by a long shot. Fun, exciting and financially sweet. I needed to pay off my truck ($28K). I only financed it because they gave an incentive and I have to keep the loan for four months. Now I don't have to deplete my cash as I had planned.

Somewhat of a bummer is that they take 24% federal tax out of the check. I had already paid in my taxes* up to the top of the 12% tax bracket so this will be entirely overpaid. I'll still be at the top of the 12% bracket, I'll just be taking lees out of my IRA.

I'll pay off the truck, take the family out to a really nice dinner, give some extra to the charities we support and call it good.

* I had a large refund coming from 2018 due to my severance and that being over withheld so I just rolled enough forward knowing I'd be maxing out the 12% bracket. I guess I could consider doing some ROTH conversion into the next higher bracket, but that wasn't the plan. I'm thinking I might amend my return and get the roll forward refunded.

Nice job. I just looked at the board driving to my dentist a minute ago. Was wondering how much you’d get with all but one. Which one in your order was off?

How exciting! DH buys lottery tickets every week, much to my chagrin. I don't gripe too much, just in case he wins big.

Congrats, Uncle Jerry!

Are you glad now that other ball didn't match, or would you really like the $300M?

I would like the $300M. I know there are those that say they wouldn’t, but I’m confident I could deal with it. Get the right professional team together and no reason it wouldn’t be good for me and family as well as the ability to do so much good. I’d like to give it a go. But hey, $50K was fun and nothing to sneeze at. Still will have some fun spreading it around.

Why not start with spreading the 50 grand around to your new best friends?

Wow, you’re truely one in a million! Actually 1 in 913,130 - according to the Powerball website.
The big one is 1 in 292,201,338 - so you can feel better knowing you were really not as close as it seems.

Congrats!
