Miss Subways
I just thought this video short (3 minutes) was touching and I'm a West Coast guy. It's about a contest for "Miss Subways in NYC" in the 60's and shows them in their current incarnation too:

I dated one of them in the late 60s, and still keep in touch with her.

No. There was a new one about every month, as I recall, so there were quite a lot of them. All very cute and they all made subway commuting slightly more pleasant.
