Also, I suspect he GW will get favorable "long term" historal evaluation because of his "rising to the occasion" with the "War on Terror."

How can you possibly believe this? I mean, the man is so obviously out of hisdepth that he'd need a periscope to see the bottom of the Mariana Trench. The Ja Vold! response to a major terrorist attack on US soil is perhaps understandable, but the subsequent ill-advised siege on the Bill of Rights and the modern day Viet Nam in the desert surely will not waft past future historians as great strategic maneuvers. C'mon, at least Lincoln could speak in complete sentences.

But it won't matter in the long run. The historians will be so busy chronicaling the impeachment proceedings that they won't have time to deal with hisother blunders.

Maybe we'll impeach ALL presidents going forward........just so the historians have something to do........... ;)

And the best part is if we go into a "Greater Depression" and the inflation rate falls to less than zero (deflation), the return on the TIPS could go negative!!!! :D

If you had a plain old Treasury, it would skyrocket in value.

Not likely on a 5 year TIPS. Even with deflation they don't adjust down below face value at maturity.

I hope there is an impeachment. It will do more harm to the dems
than Bush and will keep them occupied so as to reduce the passage
of more dopey laws. Ergo, a long impeachment process would benefit
the country.

Don't forget, he needed Congress' approval, tacit or otherwise, to do those things. He's not a king.

you been watching the news lately? He now has the power, without any oversight whatsoever and with no , appeal, to jail anyone, US citizens included, for as long as wants. No lawyers, trial, appeal.

sounds like absolute dictatorial power to me.

Frankly, I'm totally po'd at the dems for not filibustering this one.

If so, Congress gave him that power and they can take it away if they see fit. Where do you see their culpability in this? Many people seem to blame the presidents for what happens during their terms, yet our system requires the cooperation of many to get things done.

Good point.............how come the Dems want out of Iraq, yet keep voting appropriations for it??

Still waiting for an answer on that one.............. ;)

I see this point. I really do, but in the end.............
if we must have a dictator I'll take "W" over the dems any day.
You see, it all depends on the particular ox (oxen) being gored.

you are right. It takes lots of politicians, 3 branches of government, field agents, and technical specialists all working together to put together a good torture program.

And only 4 or 5 muslim extremists. Boy, are we inefficient!

Actually, the answer has been offered countless times. It really is pretty simple. If you don't have the votes to get out, you have to continue to support the thousands of Americans who are in harms way. Voting to place the innocent young Americans in even greater danger would be even more irresponsible than putting them there by lying to the American people about WMDs. :)

Can't you stop beating up on John Kerry and Hillary Clinton? It's been years.

America would have been far better off if we had dedicated enough troups to nail OBL right after 9/11.

As it was, we took our eye off the ball and wandered in to Iraq to finish the war started over a decade prior.

Yes, Bush is at fault. And yes, so is congress. That is why I am voting anti-incumbant.

Alas, many of those tortured or disappeared by our own gov't were/are not "Muslim extremists"--just Muslims in the wrong place at the worng time, with the wrong address, friends, relatives, acquaintences, or even name. This is why we have the American system of justice--so the gov't can't do things like this to human beings. arrrgh!

correction--used to have the American system of justice. Now we have a dictator with the authority to ignore the constitution, international law, and detain and torture anyone including US citizens with no oversight, no appeal, and no checks.

now what was the revolutionary war fought over again? Oh, sorry, forgot, it was about the only thing Americans seem to care about--taxes.

Some very good audio clips from a member of the Pentagon Criminal Investigation Task Force looking into Guantanamo.. Mark Fallon --sounds like a stand-up guy.

(links in the box at top)

The crazy thing is, besides getting no attendible intelligence and making us look like really bad guys to the rest of the world.. in the end our pro-torture policies may end up in our not being able to prosecute any actual wrong-doers given the abuses they've already sustained. Arrrrgh!

This of course is all the media's fault. ::)

Congress gave the executive branch the authority to make these arrests under specific conditions. The courts have upheld this. That's the way the system works.

Citizens who oppose this are right to try to elect people who will write new laws.

I wonder if US citizens incarcerated without charge have the right to vote? Maybe this is all another plot by the evil Republicans to deny voting rights to people in swing districts. Someone should do a study on where these Americans are registered to vote! Wait--there's just one guy? Just Jose Padilla? Oh.

Well, that's just the camel's nose under the tent, I'm sure! Anyway, it is the principle of the thing that is important!

Oh yeah, we're really serious about the war on terrorism. No sacrifice is too great.

I'm more concerned about the timeless fight for justice than this temporary "war" on terror. If we had kept our eyes on the prize--Bin Laden and Al Qaeda--instead of the neocon agenda for world domination and more oil, America and the world would be a much better place today. That Bush was so easily garden-pathed by these bad actors is a tragic heartbreak from where I sit. (But maybe I'm seeing it incorrectly...I gotta go to the eye doc momentarily--new lenses needed, I'm sure.)

Which law was this?

Congress allowed Bush to fight the "war on terror," which John Yoo translated as "no courts, no rights, no habeas corpus." The Supreme Court disagreed and the detainees are now allowed military tribunals and legal counsel.

It's all fun and games until you get a potato sack put over your head.

I am always fascinated and amazed at the neo-con's ability to delude themselves.

It's Clinton's fault.
