Mountains Beyond Mountains book recommendation

This is a great book, about a physician, Paul Farmer. He did not find work, he found a passion working to improve the health status of Haiti. This is about the most inspiring book I have ever read. He got very involved in conquering Drug Resistant TB in the world.
The author is Tracy Kidder.

It makes all the work I have done in my life pale by comparison. The title, Mountains beyond mountains refers to the Haitian legend that once you scale one mountain, you see the next.

After reading this, I read "The Comedians" by Graham Greene which he referenced quite a bit. It was another great read. I went on to read "Travels with my Aunt" by Greene, but in the end there is some talk of south america taking in Nazi figures and it might disturb some reader.

I had to share the Mountains beyond mountains, I will be seeing Tracy Kidder next month and this is a reading initiative in my county to read this book.

Partners In Health (PIH), Health Care for the Poor

I have a couple of friends who work at Partners in Health the non-profit that Paul Farmer started. One of them is currently in Haiti and the other is in Africa. Its amazing to hear the stories and details

Same for me--I was just about to recommend it in the thread asking for book recs.

The book is very inspiring, and it held my interest that I stayed up late a couple of nights.

(It took me a while to realize that Tracy Kidder was male. He writes so well that I thought he was female . Nah, I just wrongly assumed someone named Tracy was female and I did not notice the author's picture.)

I'm sure there are lots more organizations helping Haiti, but here is one started by the friend of a friend: What If Foundation : Helping to Feed and Educate Children in Haiti

Based upon what I've read here (and heard from others previously), I've picked up a copy of the book and look forward to reading it this weekend. Thanks for the tip ...

Just read the first few pages, but "flipstress" is right about the author. He is a gifted craftsman with words and images .... nothing like a beheading at the start of a book to grab one's attention!
