MS Word question: hollow letters?

Are there any MS Word experts here that can explain to me how to print hollow letters? I'm trying to make a poster with large letters, but I don't want to use up all the black ink in my printer. I'll just fill in the letters with a felt tip pen. Trouble is, I can't find any option that will make the letters NOT filled in. Does MicroSoft have a financial interest in ink cartridges also?

Just happened to think about the high price of ink cartridges. Costco now has a new high tech ink refill machine. Can't wait to try it. They have a special going on for $7.98 for a black refill. Used Walgreens in the past with so-so results.
