Musicians Open Mics

Since I have retired I have started plying open mics around the area. These open mics are a chance to perform in a relaxed atmosphere and meet other musicians .
It.is amazing how many retired people are doing this . Every time I go out there are new people who used to play showing up. Any others here do this .

DW and I go to a Sunday Jam every once in a while (to listen, not play). They have a house band, then guests sign up, and the band leader picks and chooses performers as the night goes on.

It's generally fun, the house band is fantastic, some of the performers are really good, some, not so much. No cover, so a few beers, and maybe $10 in the tip jar for a casual fun night out. The band leader has chatted with me since he's seen us a few times, and encouraged me to bring my keyboard and sit in, but man, I'm rusty. I should be able to handle basic blues and I-IV-V boogie/rock, but even that would need some work to build my confidence.

We went to one accidentally once.

It was late, and we figured we'd stop into this little joint for a burger. The only empty table was right up next to what would become the stage. Everyone walking by asked us what instruments we played. Huh?? We had no idea it was open mike night. It was a pretty good time anyway.

We have an older guy who just started playing guitar in February 2020 . He had lost his wife and did not really have a hobby . …The guy has got better every week and he does 4 songs like everyone else . Everyone has taken him under their wing . So it helps . Open mics are good for the older people who want to perform but don’t want the commitment of a working gig. Sometimes I play 4 of these a week.
