My Bathroom Reno(vation)

Earlier in the year I posted questions re Schluter products (waterproofing), thermostatic system, as well as whirlpool tubs. I appreciate all the responses and metioned I would post my progress when I felt I had enough pictures.

For those interested this is what I have been working on both night and day for the last couple months.

Keep in mind this is my first bathroom reno of any kind.

I decided a wanted a larger tub so I removed the linen closet and moved it back 6". My wife wasn't happy but I told her she would still be able to put the same amount of linen back in.


Reno continues :

Opening up the floor to reroute drain and vent.

There was a bit of water damage from not closing the shower curtains so I opened up the floor and replaced the wood, I also had to reroute the drain and vent since I moved the wall and will be installing a higher tub.

Thanks for showing your renovation, I'm about to start a similar renovation to my bathroom, replace a garden tub with a whirlpool tub and re-tile. Just curious, why did you remove all the tiles from the wallboard first instead of just ripping off the wallboard (tile and all) from the wall?

Three reasons zinger:

If I removed the drywall and tile together there was more of a chance that a diy'er like me would pop the drywall screws in the opposite bedroom. This would have been due to the added force I needed to remove both together. I eventually used a sawzall to cut the drywall in smaller sections making it more manageable.

For garbage reasons it was cheaper if I separated them, sort of a clean fill mix. Or so they say.

I wanted to know where moisture was starting to effect the drywall throughout the back and side walls so I could learn from it. The darker spots on the drywall shows where the moisture entered behind the tile.


I have more detailed pictures but I felt it would start to bore most members.

I started a second bathroom reno, this time I'm removing the tub for a larger shower only conversion.

OMG, what an outstanding job! You could probably do this professionally. As to the plumbing, did you do that yourself? I can sweat pipes to together, but I'm not entirely comfortable that I could handle something as complex as your install.

I did everything from moving the wall 6" (to accommodate larger tub), sweating around 150 joints since I also went from one sink to double sink vanity. This also meant going from one light fixture to two and adding a dedicated circuit for the whirlpool tub. I still need to build a recess medicine cabinet and make and install the led lights for the shower/tub area.

I can't take the credit for the paint, my dw will do most of it since I'm working on the second bathroom. She also helped me with tile setting and epoxy grouting, since they're somewhat time sensitive.

That bathroom is definitely more Las Vegas than Reno.

What a lot of work! I'm impressed.

Eventually I may want a bathroom renovation, but when I am ready for one I will call my very excellent handyman who did and/or arranged for my renovations last fall. He will take care of it. I couldn't tackle something this big on my own like you have done.

Agree totally. We re-did two bathrooms earlier this year. A neighbor did all the work beautifully for an excellent price, but it was still costly. So glad we did it though.

I've done two (one at each kid's house) in the last year. You were a bit lucky, you didn't have to replace an outside wall.

You guys really do good work. I would never tackle a job like that, but a bath redo is definitely in our future. We have a very large master bath with a garden tub which DW just hates and I agree they are useless. Next to the garden tub is the shower with glass enclosure. What I am thinking about doing is to jerk out the garden tub and the shower. Then redo the shower completely and make it a total walk-in with no door and an overhead fountain shower. I don't ever again want to have to wipe down shower doors. I'm done with that

Wow, really impressive, and very neat getting to see the process. Seems like something terrifying to try and do if you didn't have a bunch of experience already.
