I really need to get to this point, I just don't know how. Need to get over it so I can just fully enjoy my gifts to myself from the hard work. I'm pretty young still (30s) so maybe thats adding to the d-bag feel.

I do have a loan on the Outback because they had less than 1% financing. First car loan in about 40 years!

I think my username gives away my interests.
I’ve always loved cars and always worked with them. It’s important that they are nice!
I always have purchased new and keep them 12-15 years on average. We buy what we like. The DW loves triple black Suburbans. Hers is 09. Looks and drives like new. She looks like she’s part of the secret service!
I’ve always been a VW guy. Karmann Ghia’s, a Scirroco, Corrado, Jetta and now a 2012 GTI.
I‘m still able to (mostly) service our cars which is why we tend to keep them longer than normal.
I still own a 1967 VW Karmann Ghia. Driven on nice days only.
Oh, and next week is my last at the car plant.
Retirement here I come!

To answer your original question: Yes, fancy cars are a vice. But not as bad as smoking and, maybe, less expensive.

I love cars, but due to circumstances have bought/driven what was practical at the time for our budget/lifestyle.

Having finally taken early retirement in 2010, we have enjoyed a routine of driving trips around our beautiful state. My Hyundai Santa Fe SUV finally needed replacing, and I wanted very specific upgrades with my next purchase (I do 99% of the driving).

Made a "must have" and "nice to have/not mandatory" list of features, then did Net research for a year - magazine reviews and user reviews. I narrowed the list of SUVs down and in early 2017 started doing test drives.

I kept returning to one specific SUV. After almost 18 months (a specific feature I was interested in wasn't going to be available until the latest model) we took delivery of a factory-ordered 2017 Ford Edge Sport. This is the AWD model with twin-turbo 2.7L V6.

It is quiet, comfortable, has all the safety features I wanted (and none I didn't), loads of power - we live in a hilly area with fast-moving freeways; superb handling, great braking, and is perfect for driving trips.

We keep our cars on average 8-10 yrs. I don't bother trading in cars any longer. Now I just give them to friends who need a reliable used car but would struggle to pay for one. We always keep our cars in perfect mechanical condition.

I'm in my late 60's now and figured this is probably my last vehicle, so splurged for the first time on exactly what I wanted.

.....although, if I did decide to buy juuuussst one more 'last car', it would probably be an electric or hybrid. No worries about what to do with the Edge, though. My best friend, who had always ranted about hating Fords, drove the FES after I bought it, on a twisty back-country road in Sport Mode (tightens up the steering, stiffens the shocks).

She kindly volunteered to take the Edge off my hands any time I get tired of it, LOL.

We were going to pay cash, but Ford offered us a 5 yr 0% loan. I never turn down the chance to repay with inflation-devalued dollars, so we took it.

Pretty much every time I'm in the driver's seat, I remark to my husband, "Have I mentioned how much I LOVE this car?!"

He rolls his eyes and replies, "Yes, dear!"

I have always been a car guy. IMO it's less of a vice than international travel, where there is no chance of reselling and getting some or all of your money back.

Prior to 15 years of sports car racing I was fairly into cars:

Sunbeam Rapier Sedan
3-carb Austin Healy 3000
Porsche 356B Normal
Porsche 911, Solex Carbs
Lotus Elan SE Coupe
AC-Shelby 289 Cobra*
'66 Mustang GT350*
'68 Mustang GT500 KR Convert*
Several Merkur Scorpios
Morris Minor Woodie Wagon
Jensen Interceptor Coupe*
Volvo 123GT
Benz 300SEL 6.3
probably more that I don't remember. The asterisked ones are ones that I remember for sure selling at a profit.

But 10,000+ miles at racing speeds (mostly Formula Fords) have dulled my interest in fast street cars. Compared to being out there, for me having a really fast car on the street is like kissing my sister. I want enough power to do a 3-second pass on a two-lane road. My 2007 Nissan pickup will do that.

So, post-racing, recent cars have been a Mazda RX-8 and currently a Soob WRX. I'm not super happy with the Soob; too much turbo makes the throttle response fairly unpredictable and the advertised "handling" comes from the 1950s British habit of installing stiff springs and shocks. The 6-speed is a joke demanded by the marketing department and the ratios are all wrong; the engine needs only four gears. But I've decided to still keep it for the usual 8-10 years until it's time to sell.

DW's car is the "maxi-mini" Countryman. Her second Mini. She likes goofy cars.

Coming up we were buy used, finance, and hold because that’s all we could afford. The LS is the 5th car I’ve ever owned. We’ve moved on up to being cash buyers. I love the heads up display and safety features.

2018 Lexus LS500
2017 Porsche Macan GTS

Nothing wrong with spending on them if you can afford it. Some choose to live in big house and spend little on anything else...some are fine with tiny house so they can travel extensively.

I used to be an auto mechanic, and I maintain our cars very well. We live in a small city so only drive about 8,000 miles per year. We’ve only bought 5 cars in the last 26 years, and both of us have our own. On average we keep a car 12-14 years.

2015 Lexus RX350
2016 F150 work truck (used mainly for our rentals)
1969 Camaro fully restored (owned since 1984)
2007 Mustang GT500

Thomas Stanley in the book “Millionaire Next Door” wrote a whole chapter about this. And in my opinion, he was right on.

“Yes, some wealthy people prefer high-status brands. But according to the late wealth researcher, Thomas J. Stanley, most wealthy Americans don’t. Instead, they have modest consumption tastes. Most millionaires, for example, don’t drive fancy cars. Most don’t live in fancy homes. Most don’t collect wines, antiques or belong to swanky clubs. Thomas Stanley said some wealthy people like high-end cars. But millionaires aren’t driving most of the high-end cars we see on the streets. Instead, it’s people with high salaries and low wealth that are most attracted to these cars.”

I’ve noticed where my sister lives (Orange County, CA) cars are a huge status symbol. They have to have new BMW’s every couple of years to keep up with the Jones’s. Or at least they think they must. And they must keep them clean constantly.

In rural Montana where I am, my 1997 Ford F-250 PSD diesel truck with low miles is the equivalent status symbol. And I’m not expected to keep it washed and waxed. I get teased at my local ski area about having a Lincoln Navigator (a 2006) like I’m in the mafia or something. They accept my Subarus, but not the Lincoln. It’s a whole different world here, and I like it much better. I have 7 cars, a motorcycle, and a motorhome, and the newest is my 2006 Lincoln. None of them attract any attention, and that’s the way I like it. We can get “permanent plates” here once a vehicle is 10 years old, so I tend to keep them forever. Just spent $275 on one which will be good forever with no annual renewals.

Someone else paid $63,000 for my Lincoln when it was new and I bought it at 5 years old for $17,500 with 70,000 miles. I am grateful for people with what it takes to pay that kind of money for a depreciating asset. But I’m sure not one of them! I just wish it was badged as a Ford Expedition.

No place here to get BMW’s, Audi’s, Mercedes fixed. So they are out. And anyone driving one here is marked as “not from around here” and viewed with suspicion.

Cars are my splurge. I currently have 6 for two drivers.
2005 Yukon XL 2500 (bought 2006, nearly half price)
2006 Lexus GS (bought 2009 half price)
1997 BMW M3 (modded) bought 2011, it's actually appreciated
2005 Jeep Wrangler (very modded), bought for 25% of what the PO had into it.
1965 Cobra (replica) paid less than I can currently sell it for.
2018 Golf R (daily), funnest car I have ever owner.

I have a lift, do a lot of work myself. However, I'm paying 4 to 5K a year in insurance and 1500 in DMV fees. I can probably take that down to 1500 and 500 if we just cut down to two DDs. But I enjoy cars and it's worth having to work more to save more money for RE.

We drive a 2011 chevy traverse, and a 2015 chevy Silverado. both comfortable and for us practicable. Around the homestead I drive a 06 new holland diesel tractor.

For me its mostly about getting from point a to point b and to haul stuff. When I was young I put most of my income into a car only to total it. Never got hung up on vehicles since.

We go to the extremes-
Our grocery getters are a pair of Toyotas 10 and 15 years old but in excellent condition.

Our fun cars and road-trippers are Corvettes, current is a recent year that still cost us less than $65k new equipped exactly as I wanted. We traded the previous 'vette at 8 yrs/102k miles.

Rocky Mnt,
A great site to join and do research is Rennlist.com. A lot of smart helpful members (just like this site) just on Porsches. My advice:buy the seller, I may pay a little more but I need to know the history and talk to the previous owner.
Good luck.

2019 Targa 1,800 miles
2018-Raptor 10,000 miles
2018-Lariat 8,000

I’lll add a BMW ///M to the mix....The E71 X6M is my daily driver... a babied 2013 With 108,000Km that I bought as a CPO when it was two years old with warranty that just expired. Plan on keeping the Beast for the long haul with its 555 HP.

Better-half has the G01 X3 M40i purchased new in Feb....A leftover 2019...The M40i are quite lively and she enjoys it. I try to buy smart - but accept that it’s money burned....We have four years free maint on BMW here in Canada... I do most out of warranty maint myself with a good Indy as back-up....
