Not a FIRE candidate

Seems this guy isn't looking to FIRE anytime soon...

Quote:
RIO DE JANEIRO -- Betto Almeida is the Mr. Lucky of Rio's Carnival.

The 36-year-old artist awakes at 8 a.m. Has a little breakfast. Survives a commute through the city's tough traffic. Arrives at the office by 11.

Then he spends hours painting the bodies of gorgeous women -- and earning as much as $2,000 a day.

"You wouldn't believe how many applications I get for an assistant," Almeida deadpanned, never taking his eyes from his work as he brushed bright orange paint on the stomach of a model in his glass-enclosed studio under the grandstands at the Sambadrome, where Rio's Carnival parades ended Tuesday at dawn.

"But it's hard work, man. I take my job seriously."

It says she is wearing an inch and a half long piece of cloth, but as hard as I try to find it in that picture of her, I can't seem to locate it.

And I'd like to preemptively say that the link contains what I would describe as artwork of the highest quality and not anything inappropriate. As such I hope it is not subject to moderator deletion.

You may be surprised to learn that posting links to nudity is, indeed, against the community rules/terms of service. But what is really wrong with the photo is the word written across the woman’s belly, in a language many of us understand, “for sale.” Is that what you want for the women in your life, for yourself?

Last time I checked this was not a porn site, but a forum dedicated to early retirement. Why do people here want to stop working (selling their souls?) to exploitative companies where they work too many hours, cover jobs for those who have been downsized out, etc. Is selling yourself not a dirty word on this board?

I happened to go to a concert in a Catholic Church today and caught the end of a Mardi Gras Mass: “go in peace.”

I found the picture very interesting, but what really caught my eye was a link at the bottom to something called Chickipedia. Now why couldn't one of you smart cookies have come up with that?

Chickipedia - The Wiki of Hot Women

That is just hilarious.

Cuppajoe, I would respectfully suggest that we would have to agree to disagree over this. The picture is clearly art, and not pornographic or obscene in nature to my discerning eye as an art critic. And the message to which I assume you are referring, "Vende Se", or "for sale", is intended to be political commentary of an environmental nature: "Castro's stomach read "for sale" _ a message she said represented the sale of Brazil's Amazon to the U.S. Many here fear the U.S. wants to control the resource-rich region." Obviously there could be some double entendre in the message, but the nature of the political commentary is clear. And I can't imagine a better billboard for her message.

Regarding your assumption that I dominate the personal expressive nature of the women in my life, you would be wrong. If they chose to make a political commentary of this nature in this manner, I would respect their decision as intelligent human beings.

Oh, I drove by a catholic church today on the way home from selling myself, and saw a sign that said "se vende, All you can eat shrimp and fried fish - $10, lenten meal Fridays". Yum!

Sorry, Fuego, I'm easily misunderstood, I didn't mean you, you are not the one who posted the link but you are the one who requested moderator comment. This is where the "report post" button would be useful. FYI, you are not the only one who suggested that the photo is a candidate for deletion.

As for the double meaning of the photo, does it not bring to mind other famous photos? The very meaning of "double meaning" is that is has to be explained and is open to misinterpretation.

I beg your pardon for an inappropriate link and reference. I'll stick to financial and FIRE related topics from now on.

FWIW - not an excuse - the samba queen was interviewed (portuguese) where she explained her body paint - a criticism of Us and Brazilian politicians selling out the amazon.

Interesting that the link to the body painting was deleted. I guess certain moderators are unfamiliar with the movement of art that consists of painting bodies and other body-related forms of art (tattoos, piercing, body mods, henna, etc).

Our forum rules state that "Posts containing explicit, obscene or vulgar language, images or links to websites with adult content/images" may be removed. Was the Brazilian body art really considered to be adult content/images? Would posting a link to Michelangelo's David be treated similarly? I don't see how one distinguishes between the two images...

Maybe some don't have a good eye for true body art.

Only in America...

If people were to do a Google search for Brazil body paint Carnival, they might find the above image and can decide for themselves if it is art, political statement, or just an example of a job they might not have retired from ....

When the story ran in the Tribune it did not include the photo or a link to the photo, btw.

I don't know if I would say a great country, but definitely top 5 on my list, for sure! Not a great country just better than most the rest.

I understand the rules and that my 1st amdt rights don't extend here, etc. I accept the guidelines and my presence here indicates that. I just didn't think this fell under something that is impermissible here, given what others have permissibly posted in the past.

But who's judgment do you use? I'm sure a "reasonable person" in Greenwich Village or Castro St would have different standards of reasonableness than someone in, say, Texas.

There's that Potter Stewart thing again: "I'll know it when I see it"

How many pics of Vida Guerra did CFB post over the years?

I saw the link before it was deleted and didn't find it offensive. People in many countries have very different attitudes about nudity than Americans do. Even so, I can understand why the mods deleted the link and don't have a problem with that. Here's some "body art" I believe the mods will be OK with. A friend of my game me a book titled "Why Paint Cats?" and I found it quite fastinating. Here are a few examples...

And another Chicago paper (that can be easily googled) cropped the photo just below the words and just below the Obama image; it censored a large part of it by fuzzing it up.

I am not at all offended by the photo image; however I must agree it is also not fit to print here per the terms of service and community rules.

I'm not asking for agreement or debate.
I see it as a brilliant propaganda piece. It is THE photo of the week, may be in the year's top 10. Rare great composition, of the 1000s of photos taken of her in that getup, that is the one they released. It's shot from below making her monumental like "Liberty Leading the People." The explanation of the words puts their cause on the worldwide stage. It directly addresses the U.S. to pay attention to that issue; Obama is there as are two black ladies in the background. My mind jumps to the connection often made to another president connected to Illinois who is well known for freeing slaves. And this is a composition seen of U.S. slave auctions.
