I was regretting missing the fight but now not so much.

Ugly scene all around.

I wasn't aware that the referee's signal and the glove tap meant "OK, now back off out of range and come back in swinging".

I thought they meant "Fight on!"

But, yeah, Mayweather seems to agree that there's no such thing as bad publicity...

Mayweather did nothing wrong. Ortiz got what he deserved. He was show-boating and fooling around and then he thought it was a good idea not to put his hands up against one of the best fighters in the sport today.

Ortiz had just headbutted him. So they tap gloves, and Mayweather is supposed to hang out until he gets butted again?

I don't think so. If there was any thing wrong, he would have been dq'd. The announcer was an idiot.

In the fight game, bad publicity usually means good publicity. Mayweather has enough money, so he could care less about which type it is.

From my perspective, I do not believe Mayweather did anything wrong in the ring. After all, Ortiz intentionally butted him and then tried to kiss and make-up. Once the ref said fight, if you don't keep your guard up that is a big time no-no, so I would not say this was a cheap shot as Merchant was claiming.

While I do not care for Larry Merchant's fight commentaries, whether you are champ or not, IMO fighters should conduct themselves with dignity even when others are trying to pull you down.

Mayweather's was a reasonable response, flawlessly executed. Ortiz cheap-shot headbutted a seasoned pro; he's lucky all he lost was the fight.
