Old paperbacks

Going through the closet of old Sci-Fi and various other paperbacks. Hate to just junk them but its time for them to go. Part of our downsizing and consolidation period. Getting rid of stored things

Any ideas on what to do with them. Donations? Garbage? Im pretty sure I dont want to go through the hassle of trying to sell them.

It wouldn't be much hassle to take them to your local used book store, and sell them (or trade for credit). Just give them a box, they'll tell you which ones they want, and the rest get donated.

PaperBackSwap : Your source for swapping books online! is a great site, and works well, but probably not what you want in this situation, since it won't let you get rid of a bunch at once.

Donate the books to the Friends of the Library. They will sell them and use the proceeds to support your local library.

Brother-in-law is a 100% disabled vet from the 70's; had his wife take all ours down to the Vet's hospital when she was taking him in for an appointment--she said they were very much appreciated. Nice thing is if the books are a little bit racy or porno, they don't care.

You could always send them overseas to the servicemembers. When I was in Afghanistan, we had a good number of paperbacks and it was nice to pick and choose!

Every few months I gather up all the old books I don't want to keep and check their ISBN #'s on Amazon to see what used copies are going for. I find that a small percentage have a decent resale price and I sell them online (I have a Marketplace Store Account - simple to do). The rest go to either the public library as a donation, and what they don't want go to the local Half Priced Books store.

From time to time I go to Goodwill, peruse the books, and usually come away with a paperback, or a few paperbacks.
I use the library as well - but I like coming across things on the shelf at Goodwill that I might not otherwise have read - they don't cost much and there's no schedule to return them. I donate them again later.
In my own ongoing downsizing, one challenge is which books to hold on to among the academic and professional books I've been dragging around for years. Since I'm still planning on working, I've held on to many under the "you never know" rule, since some are expensive and obscure - I don't have high hopes of selling them at a high price so I'd just donate them but if I needed them again they might cost me to re-acquire.
