Play This Joke on Daughter?

We're going to see our daughter soon, and meet her serious boyfriend. We actually met him once, but just for a minute or two.

Jenny has inherited my sense of humor, and the guy seems to like to joke around:

So, here's the joke I'm considering. I email the guy, and suggest that he and I both learn this silly handshake routine.

When we meet at the airport, we do the routine. Jenny will have no idea that we set that up.

Funny? Too weird?

Even funnier if you set it up, then when he starts the routine you ask, "What the hell are you doing?"

Funny prank, go for it. Imho a great punch line would really cap it off. Will Lena be in on it?

I'd say something like: "she really doesn't know that your whole X month relationship has been just a set up by you and me, does she?"

I normally don't like pranks where someone is the butt of the joke or made to feel foolish, but your proposed joke is silly and harmless and I'm sure she'd laugh. thumbs up!

Usain Bolt can actually do that whole routine in under 3 seconds.

It's funny, but timing wise - were does the joke start?

I picture at first, Jenny will be like 'what the heck'? But only a few seconds in before she knows it was a set up.

So is the real joke that you guys would go to this length to set her up, and keep it a secret, and both be so goofy (in a fun way) together? Any risk he's gonna think this is a stupid thing to do? Worse, he might think it's stupid, but go along so as not to offend you, and that would be kinda uncomfortable for him.

I'm probably over-thinking it, but unless you are pretty sure this is going to 'work' for him, it might be a little risky. Or it could be hilarious, and talked about for years to come.

Maybe when you email him, give him lots of room to back out, 'just a suggestion', 'pretty crazy, what do you think?', ' I'm not sure I want to, just a thought, but if you think it would be funny'... let him make it his idea to go ahead!

Go for it. Should be funny if you can pull off the timing without practice.

It is funny but I would cut it way back . Jena's boyfriend is probably nervous being around her parents so maybe break him in gently .

I expected a lot of "Oh, gee. You don't know the guy. It's pretty risky. Could backfire." responses, but of course you guys aren't on the spot.

Lena is in on it. I'll see if she can get video of it, but that will be tricky.

I sent the guy a message, so there's no turning back now.

Serious boyfriend and being asked to keep a secret from your daughter before he's even met you. It's just a joke, but the dynamics are strange. The best outcome here would be you execute your handshake, your daughter appears surprised, then moments later she and the boyfriend execute a similar silly handshake.
