Married to DW for 28 years. I can't see myself ever getting married again regardless of the circumstances. The marriage process would be too stressful for me in my older years.

After my divorce I had very firmly every intention of remaining a hard-core bachelor. After three years of dating DW, I thought about it for another year. Both families had given up on us. But she is such a sweetheart....

Talking about second marriages to my older sister (also divorced once and happily remarried for 20+ years) I mentioned that I had heard the statistic that 70% of second marriages end in divorce. Her reply was "Yeah, but those are the ones who didn't learn anything the first time".

Sooo, while I cannot imagine a third marriage, I've also learned to not shut the door on such things. But it does seem highly unlikely, so it's not something I'll invest a lot of time thinking about.

Reasons to get married ever or again?

The optimist: to grow old together, someone to watch sunrises and sunsets with ;)

The pessimist: I wanted to buy a blue car but my spouse wanted a red one, so as usual, we got the red one

The realist: I wanted to buy a blue car, but my spouse wanted a red one, so we got a green one as a compromise

I'm pretty much a confirmed bachelor, but I have to admit there is a part of me that longs to drag two cast-iron tubs to the top of a hill, magically find some way to fill them, jump in with my honey and watch the sun rise over the ocean. Or is this just a TV fantasy?

Two bath tubs sexy
One hot tub = sexy

I had a bad marriage 30 years ago. Now I've been in a good relationship for almost 18 years. We own a house together and live together. I don't see any advantage to getting married - at this point - and a lot of financial hassles that we currently don't have. We DO need to get some legal work done regarding health POA and so on. Waiting until I have free time in a few weeks.

I'm not sure what I'm in is different from a marriage - except it is complicated what to call him. Boyfriend is ridiculous. Significant Other is a mouthful. Husband is often what I use. My Guy sometimes... We need a term for this when you're both over 60! :D

I guess "my hunka hunka burning love" is too long, so how about "my companion"?

Probably not..........how could anything top my 1st love?

Thinker,
When the Lee Marvin palimony suit was going on, there was a story that folks in LA were nervous as to how to introduce the other person. As the story goes they came up with:

UM UH

This is my um uh.... um uh.... um uh...

[...] it is complicated what to call him. Boyfriend is ridiculous. Significant Other is a mouthful. Husband is often what I use. My Guy sometimes... We need a term for this when you're both over 60! :D

We do! I agree.

I often refer to Frank as My Dear Friend Frank but that doesn't really get the point across. That's the best I can come up with. Significant Other is indeed a mouthful and makes me want to ask, "Other what? Huh?" I could never figure that out. Boyfriend is indeed ridiculous at our ages and doesn't imply much commitment. My Lover is just TMI, IMO, and to me that sounds like he is a gigolo and that is all we do together. If we lived together, I might call him My Roommate or My Live-In, but we don't. Luckily, for me this problem in nomenclature is pretty much limited to the internet. Here in New Orleans it is not at all uncommon for seniors who are fully committed to one another for decades to choose to live separately, for a variety of reasons. So, most people in real life don't need too much of a clue to understand what's what.

Cher ami, perhaps? But not in the midwest! We do live together but it's still a pain. Husband works best for most situations (utility company phone calls, for instance - "let me get my husband on the phone.." and let him deal with the mess if it's technical stuff.)

Roommate implies only a financial arrangement... Ugh.

"Companion" just doesn't really do it for me... "Partner" feels like a business relationship. I like "my hunka hunka burning love" but somehow there just are situations where that doesn't work. Domestic partner (but lately that implies a legal situation which doesn't exist where I live). Aaaarggghh. And if that's the worst thing I have to worry about, I'm doing okay.

Isn't that the Cialis commercial ?

This is a lively thread. What's the record for "most posts per 24 hours"?

I'm not sure of the number of posts, but the record would have been in the 'Soapbox' is my guess. But we can't go there....

My DW has me so well trained to suit her I doubt anyone else would put up with me. She has peculiar tastes but then I guess that's why she married me in the first place.

I am also in a long time live in situation and am at a loss of what to call him . I usually say Significant other on the Internet and just wing it everywhere else . I could say fiancee as we did get engaged but I backed out . I still have the ring so I guess we are semi - engaged . Most people figure out the story pretty quickly and to get married to put a legal name on it in my mind seemed lame plus it would have affected my pension .

That's the one. How do they get those tubs up there, anyway? And why isn't there just one tub? These are the things that keep me awake nights.
