propety tax breaks for seniors in CA
just wondering, is there property tax breaks for seniors in CA? I think in some states, they stop increasing the assessed value once you turned 55 or certain age. I'm not aware of anything like that in CA but certain prop allows you to carry your previous home value to the new one.

There are approx 10 counties in CA that allow 55+ to transfer their property tax base from one property to another. There are, of course, certain conditions that must be met. Here’s a link to the state board of equalization that oversees this rule

The only tax break I know California gives seniors is no income tax on their Social Security. Besides the reference from ocean view. But even then, I read today that the state is likely to dissolve the state board of equalization. So who knows what might change in the future.

The other is capping property tax increases at 2%, but that applies to everyone, not just seniors.

There used to be two property tax programs for seniors, but they were discontinued because of the cost. Although Prop 13 caps the assessed value and the basic tax rate, local governments have found that voters will approve bonds, fees, and parcel taxes if accompanied by a good sob story. The total tax rate is more like 1.5 to 1.8 percent of assessed value as a result.

I know Marin County has senior citizen exemptions from parcel taxes for things like schools and libraries. You have to apply separately for each exemption. I don't know if any other counties have similar programs (San Diego does not) but it's worth googling for wherever you live in the state.

If you live in northern California you can get a big tax break by driving over Donner Summit.

There’s a property tax reduction for disabled Veterans. The disability must be fairly severe; see this link-
