Ranking business-friendly states

Hawaii's business press is all aflutter this morning with the news that the state has vaulted from #47 to #39 in Chief Executive Magazine's ranking of business-friendly states.

Texas & Nevada retained their #1 & #2 rankings.

Massachusetts & New York retained their #49 & #50 rankings.* But they're partying in NY because they're still better than...

... California, ranked even lower than the District of Columbia for two years running.

Admittedly it's a small sample size of 339 executives and the rankings are more suited to entertainment sound bites than to serious research.* But Hawaii's Republican governor is running for re-election this year, and this is being flogged as the reason to keep her in office!

Edit: here's the full article.

Minnesota fell 26 places, dropping from #12 to #38. Martha, what's up with that? Was Gov. Jessie that good to the business community?

North Carolina #3, woo hoo! And to think the only thing we were good at was spitting out American Idol contenders...

Unions are almost unheard of here, governments here offer incentives to businesses to locate here. Well educated citizenry (in the cities, at least). Good infrastructure. Good higher education institutions.
