RIP Larry Flynt

Nobody has mentioned it yet, so I guess I will.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/10/media...ary/index.html

I recall him being quoted as saying his magazine (Hustler) was meant to be read with one hand. Paralyzed in an assassination attempt in the '70s.

Larry was a true champion of free speech.

I guess his Supreme Court case is why public figures can’t recover damages for satirical slurs against them.

I will say this. I thought I learned a lot when I stumbled upon a Playboy magazine when I was a youngster. Hustler was mind blowing.....

I was a teenager in the 1970s, and like many highschool boys, "read" pornographic magazines whenever we could get ahold of them. This is what I remember most about Hustler (it's not what you think). I acquired the Hustler magazine edition following Flynt's assignation attempt which had graphic pictures of his injury, surgery and post surgery. All I remember is close-ups with lots of blood and gore and him lying on the operating table opened up, no holds barred with his injury and surgery photos, as was the style of Hustler. I also had the first edition, until my mother found my stash! I wonder if it would be worth anything today. Hustler was a big deviation from the porno magazines of the day. All the others were "porno lite" in comparison.

I think there was a movie about this case and the actor who played Larry wore a T-shirt in court that read F*** This Court. Not sure if this was true in real life, but I would not be surprised if it was.

I'm not sure if there's a market for old Hustler mags (probably is) but there is a market for old Playboy mags. Ex. The March 1990 edition of Playboy is going for ~$50 to ~$200+ on Amazon, depending on condition. I picked up a "like new" copy of that edition at a coin show (of all places) for $50 about 3 years ago.

Ah, the famous Donald Trump cover... I bet the Marilyn Monroe issue goes for a lot more?

It says something (not sure what) about the ER audience here that we can discuss Mr. Flynt without issues, but cannot discuss another recently departed public figure due to disallowed comments.

The funny thing is I champion free speech and am glad both of them used that freedom, in very different ways with very different ideas.

I could only find re-prints of the 1st issue (MMonroe) on Amazon and it was going for less than $100.. I saw one (original they say) on Ebay for $2500. One signed by Hefner (and certified) was $6000. That's quite a price for "that piece of history"..

Hustler actually had a scratch and sniff issue. No further explanation needed.

+1 - I was thinking this as soon as I saw the Thread title.

His educational materials got me through many a Graf or Hohenfels rotation.

but in all seriousness, given his health issues and being in a wheelchair for over 40 years, he had a good run.

Woody Harrelson played Flynt in the movie "The People vs Larry Flynt":
