Seeking Free Download for Spam Filtering

Money Magazine issue just came today, and they suggested; however, I am not THAT computer literate, and the instructions on this thing has me mind boggled.
Does anyone know of a good free download for spam filtering or a way to get spamassassin to work easier than the company's instructions, which are for people more sophisticated with computers than I am, anyway.
Take a look at those instructions. What are they suggesting?

I use (free) mailwasher .... fairly easy to set up (you have to know your email server, ID and password).

Try Foxfire (for the Internet) and Thunderbird (for the email). They are free, well supported, and seem to keep the junk to a minimum. Google either term and you will find the site.
