Solved - "Page cannot be displayed" Error
At sister's house, and have been connecting via their wireless network with no problems. Today, for some sites I'd get a "Page cannot be displayed...try again later" type message. Gradually more sites returned this error and now I can't get to any web sites.
Tried rebooting, etc. Any other ideas?
Thanks,

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
Are you using Firefox for your browser by any chance?
If so, does the error message appear in a big gray box?
Is you network on Comcast?
Got a Vonage phone connected to the router by any chance?

Did you trying pinging anything at the DOS command line? -try pinging anything like www.yahoo.com to see if you get a reply back. Also, you should try renewing your IP config address at the command line while you're at it. If you don't know the IP config renew command, go to the network places, right click and run repair.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
Pinging www.yahoo.com results in "Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com..."
However, if I ping 209.131.36.158 everything works fine.
Released and renewed ip config address, but no joy.
Skype works fine.
I've concluded there's some problem in resolving the domain names. I can set the browser to 72.14.207.99 and see google that way.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
Sounds exactly like a problem I've had with my Dell wireless 802.11bg thing.
I'm curious, if you type "ipconfig /all" at a DOS prompt and compare your IP address with your DNS server address, are they wildly different? If so, that could be your problem: Your PC goes to the DNS server to translate the name to the IP address.
Dunno how to fix it though, sorry. In my case, it spontaneously started working again a few weeks later, then spontaneously quit working again a few weeks after that. I think there is a bug in there somewhere based on my Google investigation, but I don't think anyone from Dell has any interest in fixing it. Possibly buying a new wireless card might fix it; I've heard Intel is good.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
Try power cycling your modem, router and computer.
I had a similar problem getting to the Vanguard website a while ago. I could log onto any website except that one.
I power cycled and then it worked and never had a problem since.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
could try "delete temporary internet files" (tools, internet options) then close and reopen ... this often seems to work for "unexplained" browser problems.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
Are you going through a wireless router that will allow you to plug directly into the router? If so see if you get DNS when plugged in. If you maybe the DHCP server isn't working properly over wireless. You may be able to overcome the problem on the wireless laptop by setting a fixed IP address, gateway, and DNS server instead of letting DHCP set it. e.g if the pluggesd in machine get IP:192.168.1.100, gateway: 192.168.1.1; DNS XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX set up the laptop on 192.168.1.102 and use the other settings from the hardwired device.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
IP address and DNS server address only different for the last number.
Tried deleting temp files and cookies.
Can't plug in. Recycling the modem and router might be problematic, since this system here is a house of cards.
Thanks for the help.

Ping the DNS server it is trying to send you to and see if it is up. If not, hard code teh IP address you were assigned and the other DNS address.

Re: "Page cannot be displayed" Error
If I use ipconfig /all I get an address for the DNS server. If I ping that address, I get a reply.
I've also tried a system restore to time before the problem occurred. No joy there either.

Re: Solved - "Page cannot be displayed" Error
Got it. Thanks Retire@40! I finally got fed up enough to pull the plug on the modem and router, and when they came back up everything worked fine.
Man, Windows is so screwed up -- nobody should have to go through this.
