I was going to cite the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald but see Purron started with it. Of course, I would have apologized for violating the terms of her request: "Post your favorite songs about the ocean and the sea." Lightfoot's song is about Lake Superior.

Hah, your original choice is still a great one. Better to modify your terms to include any sailing songs or some such. After all, storms on the Great Lakes can be pretty horrendous events.

No real need to modify the terms. This group has a way of doing that on their own

Here's another one I have always liked. I know another artist recorded this song first, but I've always liked this version better.

Speaking of songs of the sea, I'm shocked this one hasn't been posted

Oh man,
asking a sailor about songs of the sea?
More than few come to mind in English:
Lifeboat Mona (a.k.a December '59) :
Wild Rover:
Fiddlers Green:
Leaving Liverpool:
Nova Scotia Farewell:
Spanish Ladies (a.k.a. Farewell and Adieu):
Rolling Down to Old Maui:
Santy Anno:
Marco Polo:

I guess I should stop now, before the browser collapses from all these youtube players.

Could probably fill the thread with Jimmy Buffet songs (but I won't). Still, here are a couple for you.

And then there's the story of the Pueblo -

Also a personal favorite (NOT for rockers) -

Oh, my all time favorite is Van Morrison's Into the Mystic, but bittersweet because I used it as a eulogy for a lost sailor this spring. So beautiful.

Michael, I've loved that Looking Glass song forever; it is my favorite one-hit wonder.
