I spent a bit of time reading your first 100 posts just so I had a better idea of who i was squabbling with.  I dont have the best memory in the world so I sometimes cant remember everyone's details even if they're a heavy, verbose poster such as yourself =p.

Anyway, after reading that much, my take is this.  I like your story, how your ER came about and continues (is your wife still working?), and just your general philosophy on many things.  Though i must not necessarily agree with some of your approaches based on some of the things I'm currently doing (ie: I hold a mortgage and have 100% stock), i'm always considering that I might be in err, and i'm trying to talk myself into holding more bonds and perhaps working on paying off that mortgage too (its at 5.96% and i do itemize so i can deduct the interest, but still, you have a point).  Hmm, maybe I should switch my TSP today and start adding some bonds.

You still have that ford SUV?  yeah its probably newer than my 240sx, but you said it, the japanese cars seem to be more reliable =p.   We have american SUVS in our motor pool, and i cant stand them.  (chevy trailblazers).  I'm thinking of finally replacing my 240sx with one of those cheap and frugil Honda Fit's that's coming out in a month (see honda's website).  Then again, just continuing to drive the 240sx is the cheapest option of all.  We have the nice VW Jetta Diesel Wagon for family trips.

I dont know how you can stand the pets.  I cant stand the smell and the accidents.   I guess to each his own.   The wife and the kid are only living things i want in my house besides me.

You still eating healthy, cooking, and keeping the weight down?  Keep at it!  All that smart planning that you do wont count for jack if you dont take care of yourself.

Your former ritzy life sounded very interesting, but tiring.  Yeah i'm not surprised you left that behind.  I dont want to live that way either.  I also have a middle class 2K square foot house in a sensible neighborhood and I couldn't be happier.

If you still want to be hostile towards me, that's cool.  I am very edgy with my posts, but I always have, at least what i believe to be, good intentions.  For instance, if i truly believe what i have to say is true, then from my viewpoint, i'm providing possible enlightenment free of charge.   I could keep everything I know to myself, but I think that would just be selfish.   I believe benignly written posts are often ignored, but those that jolt you a little bit get remembered.   Case and point... you noticing what I said.

So anyway, i think you're pretty cool based on what I read and it sounds like you are a great model for the aspiring ER.

Azanon -

I have to admit this is a surprising turn of events and I'll bet there are a few other people who might want to consider picking their lower jaw up off the floor before it collects anything undesirable. Perhaps you're a better person than I thought.

My boring and long winded posts aside, I obviously have no problems with people who go against the grain, or even people who are sometimes irritable. I'm one of them, after all.

I never really had any axe to grind with you, although I'll acknowledge that I was aware of your negative 'reputation' with some other posters that I respect. We've already covered the pivotal instance where I dropped from the ranks of the neutrally opined. I like Charlie a lot, his advice has helped me extensively, I was sorry to see his post that he was considering leaving, and your post to that thread as far as I was concerned sealed that 'deal'. On and off line, i'm very protective of the people and things that are important to me. I and a lot of others have a great deal invested in this 'place' and the people in it. While i'm very willing to present and contest points and ideas, when something is said that has no other benefit than to cause hard feelings...I cant appreciate that.

I've read your posts on occasion and find many of them to offer good advice and perspectives. However, you are sometimes unnecessarily abrasive and I dont think you appreciate that. Theres a fine line between being 'edgy' and being a jerk. You compared yourself to "Dr. House" from the tv show once. I'd point out that he's a heavy drug user with serious psychological problems that doesnt care a bit about the feelings of the people he works with and services. While that has a certain appeal to it, in real life he'd be fired at the end of every episode. I think the point is you DO have to take peoples feelings into consideration and extract due value from an exchange.

But...it sounds like you've had some introspection, and thats caused me to have some as well. Lets continue that, shall we?

As far as the rest of it...

The posts you read are indeed from another time and another completely different life. Those early posts were when I was freshly wet behind the ears as an ER, not sure if I had a long term plan or not, single, childless, and recently uprooted from my former mcmansion lifestyle. Compared to what I've learned from my contemporaries here, also a very naive investor.

Now married with a 13 month old, with a long term plan and settled into middle class life in a working class town...investing and life are a lot different. I was just thinking over the last few days as we've contested the relative merits of stock ownership how different my viewpoints are now than they were 2-3 years ago.

As I've said before, someone with an all stock or nearly all stock portfolio and a low interest rate mortgage that intends to stay the course long term can in fact arb a point or two of the mortgage money. I've traded some bond and cash holdings for the mortgage, as I can accurately predict the results of that exchange.

I do still have that piece of crap aging ford. Its the only thing I can put my family and dogs into and go somewhere, and the 10,000lb towing capacity comes in handy at times. While I dont enjoy regular fixing and stuff falling off of it, it was cheap to buy and right now its cheap to own.

Pets? They're a mess. But they love you unconditionally for all the right reasons. And they have their benefits. There are probably few mice in our neighborhood and should someone decide to hike open a window in the middle of the night and see whats inside my house, Ted will get to find out what balls taste like.

Eating and cooking? I'm still doing almost all of our cooking at home, and thats a real money saver. Health wise, i'm getting cynical. Everything I read seems to pooh-pooh everything else. Cholesterol doesnt matter, vegetables cause cancer, supplements dont really do any good. I've finally devolved to just eating reasonably well, maintaining a well rounded diet, getting a little exercise, and what happens happens.

As far as the rest, lets just say it was more of a tiff than a squabble, and move on?

I am truly amazed at human nature. Az, that was a very redeeming post. This is a side of you that I have never seen you display and adds a depth to you that I did not think you possessed. TH, you have always been one of my favorite posters and your response shows integrity and a willingness to let bygones be bygones. Bravo you two. :)

Regards,
LL

TH,
Where'd you get the info that cholesterol doesn't matter. That's at least the second time you've said that. I had a doc tell me the opposite a couple of weeks ago. Started Zetia, just in case.

Don't want to get off thread. So, you guys kiss and make up.. or not! :)

Actually thats the first time I said it, Nords said it befor in his book report on the folks that actually followed people throughout their lives. One of their takeways was that cholesterol made very little difference in lifespan and health. Seems counterintuitive to me, but I already know half of everything is bullshit, and lately it seems like the other half is in danger.

I'm coming to believe that we've all got a clock, and we can change that clock a little bit, and certainly improve our health and how we feel during the course of our lives...but I really dont think popping pills, extreme diets, and magic supplements are going to do you much good in the long run. I think when these things make us feel better, its because we want to feel better.

Man, I went back and read some of my own old threads. It used to take me ten years before I noticed I was an idiot ten years ago. Now it only takes three. ;)

Ah, our very own "Bareback Mountain" thread, just a touch too late for the Oscars...

Well, I'm not hugging you as long as you have that avatar anyway.
