Reading some posts I was following on another retirement board (sorry, forget the name. It's on my computer at work and I'm home now). Anyway, much talk about the benefits of retiring to Belize; English the primairy language, inexpensive living, garden of eden weather, etc. At any rate, one of the boosters of Belize gave an information site for the others to look at (again, sorry, don't have the info here). Well, the writer tells of his adventures driving to Belize (he'd lived there for some time in the past and was going back). Everything was swell until his house in Belize was burgled. He complained to the police, who then threatened his life! We also find out that a favorite ploy of the Belizian police is to search a gringos home and find a single shotgun shell. Off to jail (for possessing unregistered ammunition), face a $10,000 dollar fine and basically be required to bribe your way out of the mess. The guy finally fled the country in fear for his own safety, selling all his worldly goods there for .20 cents on the dollar.
Kind of sad, but amusing and educational as well.
