Things you just don't get !

I hate to sound stupid but what is planking? I never heard of it.

I just don't get that my wife insists on washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

Google is your friend. From wikipedia
"Planking" (or the "Lying Down Game") is an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. Both hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the game.[1] Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play.[1] The term planking refers to mimicking a wooden plank. Rigidity of the body must be maintained to constitute good planking.

Since early 2011, many participants in planking have photographed the activity on unusual locations such as atop poles, roofs and vehicles. Planking can include lying flat on a flat surface, or holding the body flat while it's supported in only some regions, with other parts of the body suspended. Uh...I get everything my DW does. Especially since she reads forum pages too. :D Frank, some things are better left undisclosed. You'll live longer

I still don't get using it to talk to other people, text seems better for that. But for tracking magazines, organizations and people of interest, it's wonderful. I check in every day, way more efficient than trying to follow interests manually. PM if you want a fuller explanation. I am glad I tried it...not at all what I expected.

As Khan used to say, when I read pop lit about "this is what women are like," I conclude that in spite of convincing physical evidence I am not actually a woman. ;)

I don't get the pillow thing, either, at least not past the early teenaged years, when the frilly bed was sort of a girls' social center.

Just about. Twenty years ago or so I read an earlier edition of this book Amazon.com: You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation (9780060959623): Deborah Tannen: Books and it was like the Book Of Revelations. "Oh, so that's why she does that!"

Still, so many times why she does what she does is still on the hazy edge of consciousness for me. The reverse is true for her. The brains are wired differently. Sometimes it's frustrating.

But she's cute.:smitten:

I don't get people watching. Those people might be watching the people who are watching them watch them watch them!

I'm always puzzled by the "we won today" comments, you were sitting on your couch watching at the time...

"I watch sports on TV for exercise. I'm really tired after a good game; aren't you?" Gallagher

One member of this board had their ISP's server go offline and thought it was something he'd done. The ISP help desk kept encouraging him to think it was something he'd done, too. Then he searched Twitter for the #hashtag of the ISP and found out that they'd had a power outage coupled with a backup generator failure. They weren't exactly forthcoming with their customers, but they were outed on Twitter within minutes.

I follow a number of personal-finance bloggers and get good ideas from their links. It's not just the articles they put on their blogs, but rather "breaking news" or other commentary that they wouldn't normally turn into a post.

Umm... Never mind... It may be just a man's thing. See below.

I don't get really big homes. Even if I had $20 million and servants I wouldn't want a 4,000+ square-foot house

Same here  ....

OTOH, I make sure the diswasher is "loaded properly" (to ensure a good water pattern to all dishes  ) which she dosen't do.

We both have our strange habits...

I'll tell you something I don't get. Why is it that so many Hollywood types and sports "stars" are always getting into trouble with the law or doing something stupid. Someone is always acting up. This latest episode with Alec (or is it Alex) Baldwin, really gets to me. Someone needs to kick their a**! They think the rules don't apply to them. I'd have loved to been a really big guy on that flight and put him in his place. Like, "look punk, do as the lady says and turn off your damn gadget or I'll stick it up your a**". Somebody needs to put these people in their place.

:2funny:I think we can all agree this post qualifies for the E-R.Org Rant  Hall of Fame!!! Take a bow, Johnnie!

I'm puzzled why they clap at the closing bell of the stock exchange when the closing numbers are down. Are they just happy the day is over?

Fun thread to read. Thanks to all. At the risk of repeating some of the great items, here are mine:

People yapping on cell phones while driving

People yapping on cell phones on trains, knowing they are annoying to those around them.

Body piercings, especially nipples and tongues BLEECHH!

People who waste money then complain they don't have enough money.

Women who refuse to date men who are shorter than they are (I am 5'11" so this has not generally been a problem for me, but I know others for whom it has been).

Two-three minutes of commercials in a TV show followed by 2 or 3 promos for upcoming shows, THEN 2-3 more minutes of commercials.

Anyone who falls for one of those Nigerian email lottery scams.

Even if I had ...servants I wouldn't want a 4,000+ square-foot house
I hope that you would then build a servants' quarter for them. Else, they would have to sleep on your couch, or in sleeping bags on the family room's floor. I can picture that in my mind.

+1. On days when the Dow dropped 4 or 5 hundred points too!

Or perhaps they just shorted the market. Darn!

They are looking at it in a positive manner - cheaper equities to buy when the market again opens  (I tend to look for the good in things, regardless of how bad things actually are...)

I enjoy people watching under the right circumstances (like NOT in Walmart!). It's a great part of traveling and exploring new places. And here in the Valley it's a very enjoyable part of going out to eat at the nicer local establishments.
