Heading out in June to Central CA. Do you need a wet suit to surf at that time of the year in the area around the monterey pennisula?

Yes, you need a wetsuit.

The water off the N CA coast comes from the gulf of Alaska (sort of an inverse gulf stream) and unlike the east coast it never really warms up to much.

T-Al will probably be along in a moment with more info.

No worries. The sharks are all down feeding on surfers in Mexico right now.

When we learned SCUBA in Monterey 20 years ago, we bought all our gear from people who'd learned in Hawaii and couldn't stand the Monterey Bay temperatures.

Which should get all the way into the low 60s. By August.

But if you're dead serious about surfing that kind of weather, you get a great product from Monterey Bay Wetsuits. I think they're up in Santa Cruz now.

If you're in Monterey itself and have the time to visit the aquarium then one of the volunteer guides (and definitely the kelp tank divers) can help you find the breaks. You can also read TromboneAl's "Surfing Safari" blog.
