For the longest time using duck duck go or even google,I was able to search for websites with -.com to exclude all sites with .com ending.
Today was searching: sauna effects -.com and I keep getting rafts of .com websites. Seems it no longer works. I tried various ways of using quotation marks, unsuccessfully. I can get non commercial sites by adding nih to the search term. Still get .com sites mixed in the results.

Any ideas how to fromulate a search to exclude .com stuff? Or have search egines decide to ignore the -.com exclusion?

By experimenting with DDG, found the solution to exclode .com.
-site:.com <whatever> If * incloded, nothing shows up.

Enjoy!

Thanks, I never knew that option existed!

To be honest, I still can't think of a time I'd use it though. If I knew the site I was after was a .org or whatever, I'd search for that. The .com TLD is pretty diverse. It seems that would omit a lot of potentially relevant sites.

Code:
Google
-site:*.com <your word>

DuckDuckGo
-site:.com <whatever>

I use the include version from time to time. That would look like:
site:early-retirement.org "target2019"

I can see include and exclude as being useful when you're in researching mode. I'll have to try more exclude-type searches.
