Letj, I agree with you to a point... however, the game today shows that some teams just do not want to try and score... playing full defense and hoping that the other team messes up and they win 1-0... because they know this, they really do not try as hard as they can to score...
Now, if you said that you will keep playing until one team scores... and will lose players along the way (and I would add to the elimination of a player that it is the OTHER team that gets to pick who is taken off the field).... and keep losing another every 5 minutes.... the teams will start to look for offense...
BTW, the players today were not running as much as Germany and Brazil IMO.... I could be wrong, but that is the impression that I have watching both games...

What a contrast between the two semi-finals. Germany v Brazil with over the top offense (albeit one sided), and Arg v Netherlands both with impenetrable defenses. The latter was less entertaining IMO, but what do I know.
It is sad when it comes down to PK's, but they can't just keep playing until someone scores, or they might not physically recover for their next matches.
Did I hear one of the commentators say Cillessen (goalie) has never stopped a PK in his entire career? Seemed odd they wouldn't put Krul in for PK's again for a World Cup semi, but I gather they'd used all their substitutions. Ouch...
Hopefully the two finals will be good. I am assuming Germany will win, but that's an amateur prediction...

Interesting link. He pronounced Curaçao with a hard second "c" (cure - a - ko). I've never heard that pronunciation used in any language, even by locals (in Papiamento), it's always been a "s" (coor - a - sao).

Apparently Van Gaal said Van Persie was spent and had to be sub'd so they couldn't do the same strategy as in the Costa Rica game. I didn't hear the comment but Krul was considered a PK specialist even though he didn't stop any in EPL this year
I'm going for Germany as well since I think they can counter very well and will break through with one of or more of their counters. And Holland showed them how to deal with Messi...he was pretty much invisible during the game

I think traditional "futball" fans don't like big changes. What you suggest won't go very well or far. They do change official ball often and it can have significant effect to the game.
Other things which I think will be interesting to change - convert all throw ins to kick ins, no tackling (won't go very far) to reduce injury, ...

I was also wondering how long it will be before they outlaw heading the ball on goal kicks, or make players wear helmets - now that goalies are sending the ball almost 75 yards! Can you say unnecessary concussion? Not only from the ball, but knocking heads with an opposing player. Stopping the ball with chest or below for goal kicks only would be just as fair for both, and wouldn't change the game appreciably.

My previous comment was unfair. Since then the Dutch played two games, both well, and outplayed their opponents fairly. The Brazilian game has lost it's beauty, for now at least.

Messi's Free Kick
I didn't see whatever it was that led to Messi getting that free kick late in the OT. (The one that he skied) What was the reason for this kick?
I am inexperienced at watching soccer football, but I though Germany was magnificent in this game. They totally dominated, even though this was not really reflected in the score.

Slide tackle from the side but missed the ball, contacted and brought down Messi, so definitely a foul and free kick.
I also thought Germany deserved to win, not just on the day's performance but for their performance throughout the tournament. By far the biggest scorers overall although the 'Golden Boot' was won by a Columbian player, because Germany's many goals came from a lot of players, exactly what a coach likes to see.

Thanks Alan. It seemed to me that there were fouls aplenty, mostly elbow administered. But coming in low and taking someone down can injure knees, so I suppose that refs have to be alert to that.

Exactly. If that particular tackle had taken the ball first and then contacted Messi to bring him down it would not have been a foul since the feet of the slider were down and not dangerous (no cleats showing). As it was it was just simply a slightly mis-timed, otherwise legal, tackle. A tackle or foul (could be a hand-ball) that is not dangerous but done deliberately to stop a player or break up play will result in a caution (yellow card) and if if it stops a clear goal scoring opportunity then it will result in a sending off (red card).

In the last World Cup Ghana v Uruguay in a quarter final game Ghana would have scored a goal in the last minute but for a hand ball save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper by Louis Suarez. He was sent off, Ghana missed the penalty, the game went to a penalty shoot out and Uruguay won.
